CSUN NOTEBOOK: MATADORS DEFENSE: NO OPTION.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

From air assault to ground attack.

A week after being passed upon nearly at will, Cal State Northridge has less than a week to prepare for the most dreaded dread

offensive system in college football. It's the option, and Southern Utah runs it with a full-house backfield. After having Monday off Monday Off is a vocal jazz group based in New York City. The quartet is composed of Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner, Richard Roland and Raymond Sage.

``It can be tough when you only have a short time to prepare,'' CSUN coach Ron Ponciano said. ``It's totally different than what we did against (Eastern Washington

).''

It means, just for the week, the Matadors (2-1) must learn a different defensive style in which keeping an assignment is paramount to defending the run successfully.

Southern Utah (1-2) is averaging 317 yards rushing per game and the Thunderbirds do it by making big plays with numerous runners.

Quarterback Matt Cannon leads the attack with 421 yards, but five players have broken a run for at least 35 yards. CSUN might catch a break with Southern Utah fullback Brook Madsen, who will miss the game with an arm injury.

``They've been pretty good up front,'' Southern Utah coach C. Ray Gregory said of the Matadors. ``They have a solid linebacking corps and the corners are good at defending.'

No ranking, little respect: The respect CSUN wanted to see in the polls after its 38-35 win against Eastern Washington didn't come Monday. The Matadors haven't been ranked in their Division I-AA history.

Instead, CSUN did nothing more than make the ``others receiving votes'' list in the Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today polls for the second consecutive week. In the Sports Network poll, CSUN is listed 26th, just missing the Top 25. In the ESPN/USA Today poll, the Matadors are 27th.

``I know I voted for them in the Top 25 (in the ESPN/USA Today poll),'' Gregory said. ``As far as I'm concerned, they're leading the Big Sky.''

But Gregory has gotten a first-hand look at the best. CSUN's Swanson noticed: It must have been a weak week for defensive players in the Big Sky Conference. Despite the Matadors allowing 502 yards of offense, CSUN linebacker Brennen Swanson was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.

However, there is a reason for Swanson's selection. He made eight tackles, including two for losses in CSUN's win. Both tackles for loss came on Eastern Washington's last two plays from scrimmage to secure the victory.
