CSUN NOTEBOOK: IN LOSS, CSUN FOUND DIRECTION.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

It may have been the best thing to happen to the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team, losing its opening game of the season.

Since scoring only 59 points in a loss to USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  at the Sports Arena on Nov. 19, the Matadors have been even better than their predicted third-place finish Noun 1. third-place finish - a finish in third place (as in a race)

in the Big Sky Conference. CSUN's recent wins at Fresno State (69-66) and Oregon (79-77) show how far the program has come in the past four years, heck, even the past four weeks.

``That USC game kind of opened our eyes,'' said junior center Brian Heinle, who has been effective coming off the bench since Fresno State. ``That game, we broke off and did our own thing. Coach (Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy. ) definitely pointed out the things we needed to do and to work and improve upon.''

Simply, the Matadors (4-2) stuck to their motion offense and got tougher on defense. Even though Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

``We have a very good system that is very good to us,'' said senior forward Andre Larry, who sat out the season's first two games but came on strong at Oregon, where he scored 23 points and had the eventual go-ahead basket with 10 seconds left. ``You just roll with the system and it will take care of you.''

Young and good: The performances of several freshmen this fall have baseball head coach Mike Batesole optimistic about the program's entrance into the Big West Conference in 2001.

``I think we've got a good chance of being back on the Division I map in two to three years,'' Batesole said. ``I want to be a top-20 program again. I think we might be able to do it.''

CSUN's top hitter in intrasquad fall league games was freshman Aaron McKenzie, a powerfully built right-handed batter from Santa Maria's Righetti High. McKenzie's average was .463 (31 for 67) and he had seven home runs.

Another pleasant surprise is freshman Bill Murphy William R.W. "Bill" Murphy (born May 9, 1981 in Anaheim, California) is a left-handed Major League Baseball relief pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Murphy attended Arlington High School in Riverside, California.

Returning infielders Tim Arroyo, Jason Gorman and J.T. Stotts, all sophomores, each batted over .333, Batesole said.
