CSUN NOTEBOOK: HUNSAKER READY TO BE HEARD.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

Having established himself as one of the defense's best trash talkers, Jermaine Hunsaker toned down during Thursday's practice.

Hunsaker, a junior cornerback, promises he will be heard Saturday when the Matadors open the season at home against Western Oregon This article is about the region of Western Oregon. For the University, see Western Oregon University.

``(The talking) will be back,'' he said. ``I promise you, it will be back.''

Barring a late development, Hunsaker will start in his first game at CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge , taking Mel Miller's spot in the lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. . Interim head coach Jeff Kearin said he's not expecting Miller, who is waiting for a grade in an independent study course to become academically eligible, will be cleared for Saturday's game.

Hunsaker practiced with the first-team defense Thursday. He's a 5-foot-9, 175-pound transfer from Washington State who ran the anchor leg on CSUN's Big Sky Conference-champion 1600-meter relay team in May.

``I came down here just to join the team and contribute,'' Hunsaker said. ``I came down here to compete.''

Defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. This position aids the head coach a great deal in many ways by delegating play calling to other coaches and allowing the head  Foster Andersen, who still is hoping for a last-minute decision on Miller, has confidence in Hunsaker.

``He's got good speed and he's willing to come up and hit you,'' Andersen said. ``By the time he gets enough practice and enough time with us, he will be very valuable.''

``I've got my shot on Saturday,'' he said.

Team player: Senior wide receiver Aaron Arnold may be the last person to know he needs seven catches Saturday to break David Romines' career record of 138.

``I haven't even thought about records,'' Arnold said. ``(They're) really not a focal point focal point

Arnold averaged just under six catches per game last season. Saturday will be his only chance to break the record at home; CSUN plays its second game at Kansas.

Kearin's not concerned about Arnold not getting any opportunities against Western Oregon.

``So much of our offense is designed to go to Aaron Arnold,'' he said. ``There's so many ways we can get him the ball.''

Spreading the word: The players spent a portion of Thursday night in dorms, handing out fliers promoting Saturday's game.

``I wanted to have a big presence in the dorms,'' Kearin said. ``We have the largest percentage of students who live in residential housing in the CSU See DSU/CSU.
