CSUN NOTEBOOK: GAME FOR SURVIVAL.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  has lost two straight. No. 23 Weber State, which peaked at No. 9 this season, has lost three in a row.

The unforeseen, and unexpected, courses of the two schools have changed the importance of Saturday's game in Ogden, Utah Ogden is the county seat of Weber County,GR6 Utah, United States. A 2006 estimate placed its population at 78,086. The city served as a major railway hub through much of its history, and still handles a great deal of freight rail traffic which makes it a . Instead of jockeying for position in the Big Sky Conference, they are playing for survival.

``I told the kids (Sunday), `How you're feeling right now is how Weber State is feeling,' '' CSUN coach Ron Ponciano said. ``The question is whether we can recover better than they do.''

Three weeks ago Weber State and CSUN were unbeaten in Big Sky play and rumblings of a showdown surfaced.

Then the Wildcats (5-3, 3-2 Big Sky) lost to Montana State, Boise State and Portland State. The Matadors (4-3, 3-2) did their part with a startling star·tle

loss to Sacramento State and another turnover-filled setback to Montana State.

Not only does another loss ruin hopes of a conference title for either CSUN or Weber State, it would also squash faint playoff hopes.

``We lose three games in a row and had a chance to win the games, so it wears on you quite a bit,'' Weber State coach Jerry Graybeal said. ``I think all the teams in the league with two losses feel there's a sense of urgency. I think there's going to be some sorting out this week.''

Outta sight: It brought national attention for three weeks, but, as expected, CSUN dropped out of both major polls Monday. And the Matadors fell hard.

In the Sports Network poll, CSUN dropped from No. 24 to the also-receiving-votes category, where it checked in at 35th. In the USA Today USA Today

It ended a three-week stay in the national rankings for CSUN, which topped out at 16th in both polls after an Oct. 10 win against Montana.

Weber State fell six spots to No. 23 in the Sports Network poll and eight places to 25th by the coaches.

Expected back: Ponciano lauded the efforts of Ryan Schatz at left tackle against Montana State, but said he will move the senior back to tight end this week because Mike Barnes is expected back from a shoulder injury. Also, center Beau Cherry (ankle) should return to add depth to the offensive line.

There was good news for CSUN's second-leading receiver Mike Ogas. X-rays showed no break to his left index finger, and he should be available for Weber State. However, senior Kenny Knoop saw his season end. An MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
