CSUN NOTEBOOK: FRESHMAN CATCHES BRASWELL'S EYE.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

A quick glance at the box score indicated nothing special about Craig Calloway's debut for the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team against USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  last week.

Calloway, a freshman point guard, made a 3-pointer, had one assist, one turnover and one foul in just seven minutes. But he impressed CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  head coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy. .

``I was very pleased with Craig,'' Braswell said. ``He's struggled a little bit in practice. But he came in . . . and got us in our offense.''

The 6-foot-1 Calloway was an All-Moore League selection at Long Beach's Jordan High last season. That's no small feat; the league is considered one of the best in the state.

So a five-point debut, in a 73-59 loss to the Trojans, wasn't too bad for Calloway. That doesn't bode well for Markus Carr, the Matadors' starting point Noun 1. starting point - earliest limiting point

No hard feelings: Junior guard Edniesha Curry scored a game-high 25 points in CSUN's women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  69-62 win over Pepperdine on Saturday night.

Curry, despite being an All-Golden League selection at Palmdale in 1996-97, wasn't recruited by Pepperdine. She said she doesn't mind being snubbed by the Waves.

``I usually don't hold any personal grudges,'' Curry said. ``I just go out there and play hard.''

She's fast: The women's swimming team has been given a boost by junior transfer Lisa Andrade, who broke the school record in the 200 breaststroke in her second meet as a Matador.

Andrade was third overall in 2 minutes, 18.49 seconds at the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Invitational on Oct. 29-30. She was 1.3 seconds faster than Tina Schnare's time of 2:19.79, set in 1986.

Andrade wasn't as fast in the same event Saturday against Pepperdine, but she won in 2:19.37 and the Matadors beat the Waves in Malibu 159-158.

CSUN's Katie Cartnell won two events Saturday: the 500 freestyle (5:06.90) and 1,000 freestyle (10:27.40); the Matadors' Nicole Benson won the 200 backstroke in 2:10.20.

No luck: The baseball program, boosted by the news it will be joining the Big West in 2001, almost landed one of the state's top recruits: Clovis High shortstop Chris Patrick Chris Patrick (born August 22, 1984 in Ithaca, Michigan) is an American football offensive tackle for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants out of the University of Nebraska after the 2007 NFL , who signed with Fresno State.

CSUN was a finalist for Patrick, whose older brother Kevin was the Matadors' second baseman last year. Kevin Patrick is now a graduate assistant coach at Northridge.

Fixing the floor: The Matador Gym basketball court was stripped, cleaned and polished just two days prior to the women's game against Pepperdine.

The floor had to be cleaned after a company hired to do work on the roof of the kinesiology building, which houses the gym, left the court a blackened black·en

The cost for cleaning the court is undetermined. Mark Adamiak, CSUN's assistant events manager, was relieved the floor was refinished before the season began.

``We had a window of 55 hours,'' Adamiak said. ``It takes 36 hours. We barely got it done.''
