CSUN NOTEBOOK: FAST PACE FOR WOMEN'S SOCCER.Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer As they rush from one place to the next - in this case the practice field to a nearby parking lot, then on to an AYSO AYSO American Youth Soccer Organization AYSO All Your Saturdays Occupied AYSO Alabama Youth Soccer Organization AYSO Albuquerque Youth Soccer Organization (Albuquerque, New Mexico) function - it is clear the pace of the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team would not go over well in a Florida retirement community. It's fast. The future is bright for the Matadors, who are getting quality play from several freshmen, and they aren't waiting for things to happen. CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge is quickly moving toward respectability re·spect·a·bil·i·ty n. The quality, state, or characteristic of being respectable. Noun 1. respectability - honorableness by virtue of being respectable and having a good reputation reputability under Allison Lee, who at 26 is a Division I college head coach for the first time. The Matadors improved to 4-2-1 after Sunday's 1-0 nonconference victory at UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. . The players are happy with each other and with Lee, which is making a difference for a program that has never had a winning season. ``All the seniors and returning players have been so cool,'' said freshman forward Gentry Green, who had two goals in her first five college games. ``They've been nice to the rookies, saying this year is so different than last year.'' CSUN struggled on and off the field in 1998. Head coach Brian Wiesner, who had led the program from its inception in 1995, announced his resignation after a season in which the Matadors were 6-13. The day he resigned, goalkeeper Tawni Takagi said of Wiesner: ``As a coach he was respected, but sometimes as a person it was questionable.'' Now under Lee, Wiesner's former top assistant, CSUN women's soccer seems to have stability. Among the Matadors' wins this season are a 2-0 win over an Air Force team that returned 11 starters from '98 and a 1-0 win at Fresno State, which returned 10 starters from last season. All this came after CSUN opened the season with a 4-0 loss at Loyola Marymount. Lee made six lineup changes after the LMU LMU Ludwig Maximilians Universität (München) LMU Loyola Marymount University LMU Leeds Metropolitan University (UK) LMU Lincoln Memorial University LMU Location Measurement Unit match. ``We totally revamped,'' Lee said. ``(We) weren't ready for that (game). Loyola had a scrimmage against USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. before us.'' Green, a two-time All-Foothill League player at Canyon High, benefited from the changes. After barely playing in the opener, she moved into the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see . A starting lineup in sports refers to the set of players actively participating in the event when the game begins. The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes two games later. Green has taken 11 shots, second highest on the team. Leading with 12 shots is another freshman, midfielder Paige Andrews. ``I love our freshmen,'' Lee said. ``They're all bubbly and friendly and have great attitudes.'' |
