CSUN NOTEBOOK: CSUN NEEDS VICTORIES TO PLANT BIG WEST SEED.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

The Cal State Northridge men's basketball team probably has to win its final two games to avoid dropping substantially in the Big West Conference Tournament seedings.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (10-15, 9-7) is in a three-way tie for third, but UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  likely will earn the third seed with two wins - it plays cellar cellar

Utah State will win the Big West if it wins one of its final two games and UC Irvine would get the second seed.

The Matadors have two home games remaining, against Idaho (9-16, 6-10) today and conference leader Utah State (21-4, 13-3) Saturday. If CSUN and Pacific (17-9, 9-7) split their games and Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

wins out - it plays Riverside and Fullerton - there would be a three-way tie for fourth. Five teams have a chance to earn the third seed.

``I just want to finish strong and worry about the seedings later,'' senior guard Markus Carr said. ``That's what's most important.''

CSUN probably will earn the No. 6 seed if there's a three-way tie for fourth because it would lose all the tiebreakers with its 10-8 conference record. If CSUN is sixth and Santa Barbara third, the teams would play in the first round of the tournament March 7. The Gauchos swept the Matadors this season.

is head-to-head competition, and all fourth-place teams split in that situation. The next tiebreaker is how the teams fared against the top seed, then second seed, etc., until a tie is broken.

CSUN coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  said he isn't worried about it.

``I mean it when I say that stuff doesn't even enter my mind at this point,'' Braswell said. ``If we can win out here, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

where that puts us, but that's what the plan is. We'll try to get this game (today) and be successful and not lose any ground.''

--Fullerton incident: Braswell and Cal State Fullerton student Kevin Jacks were involved in a confrontation during halftime of Saturday's game at Titan Gym Titan Gym is a 3,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Fullerton, California. It is home to the California State University, Fullerton Titans basketball team. This arena was built in 1997. It is also used for hockey and volleyball. .

``(Jacks) took a towel, wiped his butt with it and threw it in my face,'' Braswell said. ``It was a situation where a guy was two or three feet away from me. He called me two or three times and I turned around and then he does that. Security and supervision wasn't what it needed to be. I pushed him. That's it. That was the end of it.''

Jacks said a CSUN player threw a towel at him, which he then threw at Braswell. Jacks was escorted from the gym through a hallway by police, which is where Braswell pushed him, according to according to

``I sat back down in my seat and two cops escorted me out,'' Jacks said. ``(Braswell) came and got me when I took a right out of the gym. I had my back to him. It was a full running push. It happened in the hallway where the crowd could not see. The guy should say sorry to me at least.''

A spokeswoman from the Orange County District Attorney's Office said the case had not been received for filing. Jacks said he is considering filing charges.

--A rare assist: Carr was upset after he saw the box score of CSUN's game at Cal State Fullerton, which had him with just three assists. CSUN officials called Fullerton officials, who watched film of the game and credited Carr with eight assists.

Fullerton had a new spotter calling statistics Saturday.

``It's the principle,'' Carr said. ``I was out there playing hard. It doesn't matter what the stats end up, but obviously I had more than three assists and I wanted to get credit for them.''

--Practice isn't perfect: Thirty minutes into Tuesday's practice, Braswell canceled it. He challenged players in a scrimmage at the beginning of the session and wasn't pleased with the effort.

Players met in a private meeting after practice, asked Braswell to let them finish and he did.
