CSUN NOTEBOOK: CSUN AWARE OF DEFICIENCIES.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Curtis Slaughter took a little advice from Cal State Northridge coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  during Saturday's game.

Slaughter and his teammates had endured about a 10-minute stretch without a field goal at UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  when Braswell saw Slaughter grimace grimace Neurology A humorless facial 'mask' typically seen in Pts with catatonia. He did. Slaughter took 1,000 shots Sunday - just him, a basket and a friend to rebound.

``I've got to find a way to fix it,'' Slaughter said. ``I've got to make sure it's right. My arm's hurting, but that's a good thing.''

Braswell hopes his team's shooting woes are over because CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (8-13, 7-5) plays Big West Conference leader UC Irvine (17-7, 10-3) at 5:35 p.m. today at Northridge Gym. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net 2.

The Matadors beat the Anteaters - who are tied with Utah State for first place in the conference - in overtime last month at the Bren Center but have lost their past three games.

The Matadors scored just 20 points and made only five field goals against the Gauchos in the second half. They've shot a combined 36.3 percent in the three games.

the home run too early or the 3-pointer,'' Braswell said. ``We've got to learn how to grind things out, toughen up and not settle for the easy-way offense, firing up the first easy shot.

``I told the guys, `There's a reason you're open. That's what they want.' ''

--Coach's critique: Braswell has submitted a report to John Dangleis, the supervisor for Big West officials, regarding the officiating in CSUN's 58-51 loss at UC Santa Barbara. Normally, Braswell doesn't fill out a report for road games but did this time and even edited a tape for Dangleis with four plays he deemed critical in the game.

--NIT bid? CSUN must win its final six games to finish the regular season above .500. If the Matadors don't win the Big West tournament, they'll look for a bid from the NIT A measurement of luminance. One nit is equal to one candela per square meter (1cd/m2). Ten thousand nits are equal to one stilb. See candela. , which has expanded its field from 32 to 40 teams.

Braswell believes the Matadors should've been extended an invitation in 2000.
