CSUN NOTEBOOK: BUBB TO RECEIVE 11 MONTHS PAY.

As part of the settlement stemming from his resignation, former Cal State Northridge athletic director Paul Bubb will receive 11 months salary, school spokesman John Chandler said.

Bubb was paid $86,700 annually, according to CSUN human resources director Steve Montgomery. Based on his salary over the 11 months, Bubb will collect $79,475 from the school.

According to the breakdown, Bubb receives three months pay for standard services provided to the university during his three-year tenure as athletic director - one month for each year.

Bubb receives 5-1/2 months pay for his time spent at the school before he became athletic director, Chandler said. Once again, it's one month for each year of employment.

And Bubb received 2-1/2 months pay from accrued vacation time, Chandler said. Chandler added Bubb's agreement includes a paid trip to the NCAA convention later in the academic year.

Bubb, 41, resigned Nov. 3 in the wake of the scandal involving then women's basketball coach Michael Abraham. Abraham was arrested Oct. 27 and charged by the FBI with trafficking in crack cocaine. Abraham was placed on paid administrative leave but resigned his post Nov. 6

Bubb resigned under pressure from CSUN president Blenda Wilson. Bubb was in Springfield, Mo., Saturday for CSUN's football game against Southwest Missouri State and is expected to travel to Idaho State next week. University officials said school funds were not being used to make the trips.

Postseason blues? After beginning the season 0-4, CSUN's men's soccer team won 11 of 12 heading into its regular-season finale at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. But don't expect the NCAA selection committee to come calling in regard to the NCAA Tournament, and much of that is the Matadors' fault.

CSUN, which will rejoin the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation next season, played as an independent this season after coach Marwan Ass'ad called the conference to tell it not to include the Matadors in the 1998 schedule.

It stemmed from the uncertainty of the program following the infamous dropping and reinstating of four sports, including men's soccer.

But CSUN athletic officials and MPSF officials said the Matadors probably would make the NCAAs if the team were affiliated with the MPSF this season.

Women's basketball: Fresh off an 83-72 victory over Oakland (Minn.) University in Saturday's season opener, CSUN's women's team returns to the court tonight (7:05) against Portland.
