CSUN NOTEBOOK: BUBB RUBBED WRONG WAY BY INVESTIGATION.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

One of the two very serious reasons Cal State Northridge gave head football coach Ron Ponciano for his termination was the allegation he had misappropriated mis·ap·pro·pri·ate

state funds as an assistant in 1996.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  accused Ponciano of fudging expense receipts. On July 16, the day Ponciano was fired, interim university President Louanne Kennedy said the internal investigation into the football program discovered ``a lack of institutional control.''

Paul Bubb, CSUN's former athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  who hired Ponciano as head coach in 1998, spoke out about that accusation on Thursday.

``One of the things I kept hearing about Ron was (his) expenditures,'' Bubb said. ``Those were all things that were signed off on by the vice president of student affairs' office. To me, if there was a problem with anything back then, why wasn't it uncovered back then?

``The vice president of student affairs Student affairs staff are responsible for academic advising and support services delivery at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. The chief student affairs officer at a college or university often reports directly to the chief executive of the institution.  (Ron Kopita) was signing off on all that paperwork, as well. The athletic department budget was under control of the student affairs office. I didn't have control of our budget until '97-'98.''

Bubb, who resigned last November, said he was interviewed only briefly by internal auditor Internal auditor

Peter Dinauer during the course of the investigation. Dinauer's report hasn't been released, though it has been three weeks since Ponciano's firing.

``What he spoke to me about was very specific,'' said Bubb, who said he couldn't mention the nature of Dinauer's questions. ``(But) I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Bubb has pursued a few jobs since he left CSUN, but he still lives in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

. He received $79,475 in the settlement stemming from his resignation.

``I'm taking a look at different opportunities,'' he said.

Kopita left CSUN this past spring for Witchia State. His responsibilities had diminished under former president Blenda Wilson.

In the dark: Sam Jankovich Sam Jankovich was born in Butte, Montana and lettered in football while playing for the University of Montana in 1957. He played linebacker and offensive line. A knee injury ended his career.

After graduation, he coached a couple of Montana high school football teams.
, who succeeded Bubb as the athletic director on an interim basis, said he heard ``rumors'' that Ponciano's job was in jeopardy before Jankovich's term ended on June 30.

``Nothing is ever shocking,'' said Jankovich, who lives in semi-retirement in Idaho. ``I feel bad for all the people involved, that's for sure. I feel bad for Ponciano, because the guy is an excellent football coach.''

Jankovich said he wasn't consulted during the investigation because of his interim status. The inquiry began in mid-May, just six weeks before Jankovich was going to leave as interim athletic director.

Ready to go: With football practice beginning next Wednesday, two more coaches have been added to interim head coach Jeff Kearin's staff.

Kearin said Thursday that David Robinson David Robinson or Dave Robinson is a name shared by the following individuals:
  • David Robinson (philanthropist) (1904-1987), British entrepreneur, philanthropist and owner of racing stables who was knighted in 1985

, has agreed to coach the defensive linemen and Brent Huff is returning as a part-time defensive-backs coach.

Robinson, 36, was a USC assistant from 1993-97. He coached the tight ends for three seasons and linebackers from 1996-97 under his father. Huff, a 1992 graduate of Oregon State, has been a part-time coach at CSUN the last two seasons.

Rankings: CSUN is ranked No. 149 out of 237 teams in the Sagarin Ratings published by USA Today. Four Big Sky Conference teams - Montana (100), Eastern Washington (126), Northern Arizona (130), and Montana State (131) - are ranked ahead of Northridge.

Kansas, which plays CSUN on Sept. 11, is ranked 57th by Sagarin. Southern Methodist, which hosts CSUN on Nov. 13, is 70th.

Two-a-days: The Matadors will practice twice per day through August and in the afternoon during the season. Kearin decided to drop Ponciano's plan for 6 a.m. weekday practices.

``We'll probably go at 4 o'clock,'' Kearin said. ``I don't want any kids here before 7:30 (a.m.).''

Ass'ad applies: Former Northridge men's soccer coach Marwan Ass'ad, in an attempt to maintain ties with the local soccer community, has applied for the vacant Chatsworth girls' job.

a full-time day job,'' Ass'ad said. ``Trust me, it's not the income. I'm hoping to stay close to my kids and I'm hoping I'll be able to teach. Chatsworth's my school and that's where (son) Charlie will go in a couple of years.''

Ass'ad, who won 192 games in 14 seasons at CSUN and won conference Coach of the Year honors in 1993, hopes to interview next week. Chatsworth, under Jack Sidwell, won nine City titles in 11 years.
