CSUN NOTEBOOK: AILING ALCALA ITCHING TO PLAY.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

Julio Alcala wanted to mask the pain. He wanted the cortisone cortisone (kôr`tĭsōn'), steroid hormone whose main physiological effect is on carbohydrate metabolism. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland under the stimulation of adrenocorticotropic  shot.

But the Cal State Northridge football coaches vetoed the idea, and Alcala, a senior offensive lineman who hadn't missed a game because of an injury in his CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  career, didn't play in the Matadors' 24-21 win at Montana State on Saturday.

Alcala, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound center, returned to practice Tuesday but didn't participate in most drills. He severely sprained his left ankle on Oct. 16 against Sacramento State.

``You don't want to end your senior season just watching,'' Alcala said. ``I love to play. I was really just mad, because I had never beaten Montana State. I wanted to take it to those guys.

``Even though I didn't play, I was just happy we beat Montana State.''

If his ankle doesn't get better, Alcala said he would ask offensive line coach Bobby Connelly for a cortisone shot this Saturday for the Matadors' home game against Weber State.

``I told coach Connelly I have four more games,'' Alcala said, ``and the rest of my life to heal.''

Jeff Kearin, CSUN's interim head coach, said he's hesitant hes·i·tant

to let Alcala get the pain-killing shot.

``I'm not a big fan of doing that,'' Kearin said. ``I think (Alcala) will be all right.''

Gutty performance: Even without Alcala, the CSUN offensive linemen had one of their strongest games against Montana State.

``We got better without Julio, which is promising,'' Kearin said.

The Matadors were forced into a quandary when Alcala's replacement, Javier Ortiz Javier Ortiz may refer to:

The ability to trade a bond or other debt instrument in for stock may entice investors, if they feel the stock will appreciate.
Derek Brown, who had a season-high three field goals against Montana State, was named Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week.

Brown, who was good on kicks of 37, 29 and 37 yards against the Bobcats, is now 7 for 10 on field-goal-attempts this season. He wasn't able to kick all summer because of an injury to his right (kicking) leg.

``I'm starting to get back in the groove In the Groove may refer to:

Brown had a chance to become the second CSUN kicker in two years to have four field goals in a game - Manny Manny may refer to:

Marquez did it last year, also against Montana State - but his final attempt was blocked on what Brown called a ``horrible kick.''

``I guess it was just the mechanics, but it was low,'' he said. ``It was pretty bad.''

New addition: Jason Mageo, a senior defensive lineman, and his wife Kimberly had their second child, Josephine, on Oct. 17.

The Mageos have a 2-year-old son, Faleniko. Mageo missed two practices last week to be with his family, then made the trip to Montana State and got his third sack of the season in the fourth quarter.

``Everybody's doing good,'' said Mageo, but then he added, ``It's been tiring tir·ing

the last week. . . . It's kind of hard to balance everything.''

The birth of Faleniko in October 1997 was also memorable, said Mageo, who was playing at Oregon State at the time: Faleniko was born during halftime of the Beavers' game against Washington.

``They were watching me on TV when he was born,'' Mageo said.
