CSUN HONORS FOR OVER 1,000 STANDOUT STUDENTS INCLUDE A 69-YEAR-OLD GRAD.

Two thousand two is a big year for Carol Rosenthal. In September, she turns 70. And on Tuesday, she got her bachelor's degree with honors at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an .

``All my kids are grown. I got to go back to school. It took me two years to get through. And now I'm going to get my master's,'' said a beaming Rosenthal in her purple dress and Star of David around her neck. ``This is great.''

Rosenthal was one of more than 1,000 students who closed a chapter in their lives Tuesday, receiving medallions at an Honors Convocation in the first of several commencement ceremonies.

A record number of students is expected to graduate this year from CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  in a weeklong series of commencement ceremonies kicked off Tuesday.

This year, an estimated 7,677 students are candidates for bachelor's and master's degrees - slightly more than the number who were eligible for graduation last year when 5,185 degrees were conferred.

``This is a very special event,'' said CSUN President Jolene Koester Jolene Koester is the president of California State University, Northridge. The California State University Board of Trustees announced her appointment as president on November 16, 1999, and she took office as the fourth president of the University on July 1, 2000. , sounding similar themes from her speech last year. ``Our hats are off to you.''

Parents beamed with pride.

``I'm very proud,'' said Norik Haruthunian, 51, whose son, Zorik, is a 3.8-grade point average finance major, who lined up for his honors in the quad area of the University Club.

``He's planning for the next step,'' he said. ``He's got to just keep going. He's self-motivated.''

Emily Beal, 21, received her medallion on Tuesday. The 21-year-old communication studies major also juggled a job as an event coordinator for King's College King's College, former name of Columbia Univ.  and Seminary in Van Nuys.

There are a few things she's going to miss about college. The professors for one. The late nights studying - that's another story.

He urged the students to bask in the pride and accomplishment of their feat, but be prepared for life's many challenges.

``Enjoy it, even revel in it,'' he said. ``Soon enough the outside world will put some challenges in your way and probably sooner than you'd like ... things can be pretty tough out there.''

``But take some reassurance with the fact that my graduating class faced similar challenges,'' he said.
