UCLA starter and Chatsworth High alum Mike Kunes (1-0) was on a pitch count and earned the win with 3 1/3 respectable innings. But St. Francis High of La Canada product Paul Diaz provided the best performance among a combined 10 pitchers. The Matadors pulled within 8-3 and loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Diaz replaced Kunes and ended the threat with a strikeout of pinch hitter Aaron McKenzie and getting J.T. Stotts on a flyout to left.
