CSUN HITS BUMP IN ROAD AT UCLA PITCHING LETS DOWN IN LOSS TO BRUINS UCLA 12, CSUN 7.

A few twists here, a couple of turns there. So goes Cal State Northridge's pre-Big West Conference tuneup.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (14-8) has two nonconference games and 10 days until the first game in their new conference, March 23 at Pacific.

``We still have some things that are going to have to shake out. We still have some work to do,'' Matadors coach Mike Batesole said. ``I think we'll have it figured out.''

Among the Matadors' biggest dilemmas is settling on a lineup and the starting rotation. Having three quality pitchers is critical with the abundance of three-game conference series dotting the schedule from March to May.

Sophomore left-hander Bill Murphy William R.W. "Bill" Murphy (born May 9, 1981 in Anaheim, California) is a left-handed Major League Baseball relief pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Murphy attended Arlington High School in Riverside, California.
hadn't been a concern yet, and no panic buttons are about to be punched after his rough one-plus-inning start against the Bruins (14-7).

Taking the mound for his sixth start at 4-0 with a 3.03 earned-run average, Murphy was expected to pitch just two innings but never recorded an out in the second.

The four hitters he faced in the inning reached on a double, two walks and a hit batter. Each scored as part of an eight-run disaster from which the Matadors never recovered.

In all, Murphy (4-1) was charged with four walks, a balk balk

and the aforementioned Bruin that was hit.

``Everybody has those kind of days. Of course you try to limit them,'' Matadors catcher Jason Allec said. ``Bill just goes out and tries to get ahead of hitters. Today, he just didn't have it. When you get behind hitters, it's tough to get anything going.''

are a combined 7-1. The third member of the Big West staff could be in question. At 6'7" tall, Loe is one of the tallest players in the game and also has a 7 foot boa constrictor named Angel which he keeps in the Rangers clubhouse.  and Ryan McDermott, allowed an earned run Tuesday in short stints.

UCLA starter and Chatsworth High alum Mike Kunes (1-0) was on a pitch count and earned the win with 3 1/3 respectable innings. But St. Francis High of La Canada product Paul Diaz provided the best performance among a combined 10 pitchers.

The Matadors pulled within 8-3 and loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Diaz replaced Kunes and ended the threat with a strikeout of pinch hitter Aaron McKenzie and getting J.T. Stotts on a flyout to left.
