CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  President Blenda Wilson said she selected Outhouse for his fund-raising fund-raising, large-scale soliciting of voluntary contributions, especially in the United States. ``He sees us as having tremendous potential, as an exciting place with a great history,'' Wilson said. ``I think it's a good match.''

Other finalists for the $125,000-per-year position were Michael Hammerschmidt, CSUN's director of university development, and Janis Ivie Cavin, director of development at the University of Texas at El Paso The University of Texas at El Paso, popularly known as UTEP, is a public, coeducational university, and it is a member of the University of Texas System. Critics have blamed the university for dragging its feet in hiring a chief fund-raiser while other Cal State campuses appointed their executives and saw funds rise. The search process began about two years ago.

The delay seemed especially troublesome to many in light of Wilson's decision this summer to drop four men's sports teams, due in part to lack of funding.

``This should've happened a long time ago . . . the fact that we haven't had one really hampered us,'' said Will Sylianteng, chief of staff for CSUN's Associated Students.

Over the eight years at Arkansas, Outhouse, 53, built the school's fund-raising pot from about $3 million to a high of $43 million in 1993-94.
