CSUN HEAD SPEAKS OUT FOR STORE PLAN.

Byline: Yvette Cabrera Daily News Staff Writer

Building an upscale retail center on the Cal State Northridge campus is the best way to raise money during these tough economic times, CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  President Blenda Wilson told students, faculty and staff Wednesday.

``The University MarketCenter is a means of having the college use its unused asset of land in the north end of the campus to create $850,000 to $1 million in revenue,'' Wilson said during CSUN's annual spring forum in the auditorium auditorium

By the mid-19th cent. the Salon had become an expression of conservative, established tastes in art. .

Wilson's comments came two days after the release of a report on the project's impact on the environment.

About 45 people - primarily the university's administrators and staff - attended the forum, one of two held that day.

Wilson noted, however, that the private/public venture has the support of the CSU See DSU/CSU.

One concern raised during the forum was whether Cal State Northridge would hold a second public hearing on the environmental impact report, particularly because the scheduled March 27 hearing date falls during spring break.

Frank Wein, facilities director for CSUN's North Campus, said after the meeting that under the law, the university must hold the meeting within 45 days of the report's release.

``The reason to put it at roughly the middle of the 45-day period is this gives people four to five weeks to review it and will allow them to come to the hearing to comment,'' said Wein.

After the hearing, the public will have an additional two weeks to submit written comments, which are due April 14.

``If you did the public hearing at the very end of the 45 days that's cheating,'' said Wein. ``If you do it too soon, it doesn't give the community enough time to prepare.''
