CSUN GETS TOUGH PAIRING.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

Cal State Northridge softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  coach Janet Janet: see Clouet, Jean.

Sherman could find something positive to say about being mugged.

And so it was Sunday evening in the clubhouse of the El Cariso Golf Course after Sherman and her team learned they were the No. 4 seed in the NCAA NCAA

``Fullerton is where we want to go,'' Sherman said. ``It's a great opportunity for us.''

The eight four-team Regionals will run Friday through Sunday and determine the eight teams that will advance to the College World Series May 23 to 27 in Columbus, Ga.

The NCAA protects the top four seeds in the softball Regionals. In theory, that means the No. 4 seed will be placed in an easier regional than, say, the 24th-ranked team in the country.

But the NCAA also is strict about placing teams in the same geographic area in the same regional whenever possible. Because of the concentration of top softball teams in California, local teams get hurt - while No. 24 Princeton gets put in a regional with three unranked teams.

``It is true, they weed weed, common term for any wild plant, particularly an undesired plant, growing in cultivated ground, where it competes with crop plants for soil nutrients and water.  out the California teams,'' Sherman said. ``Softball has not reached that plateau plateau, elevated, level or nearly level portion of the earth's surface, larger in summit area than a mountain and bounded on at least one side by steep slopes, occurring on land or in oceans.  where money is not an object.''

Northridge (42-14) will open play in the regionals at 7 p.m. Friday against Southwest Missouri State (34-20). Cal State Fullerton (38-25) and UCLA (40-8) play at 4:30 p.m. Play continues Saturday afternoon, and the championship game of the double-elimination tournament A double-elimination tournament is a competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches.  is 1 p.m. Sunday.

Northridge hosted the regional last year and lost to Fullerton in the final.

Top-ranked Washington received the No. 1 seed in the Regionals and will host Jacksonville State, Indiana and Oklahoma State. Second-seeded Arizona will be in a Regional at Tallahassee, Fla. with Troy State, Florida State and Southern Florida. Fresno State, seeded third, will host Texas A&M, Long Beach State and California.
