CSUN FINDS BIT OF RELIEF; AN EFFECTIVE BULLPEN AIDS SPLIT WITH OSU : OREGON STATE 8-4, CSUN 4-8.

Byline: Chris Branam Daily News Staff Writer

Just when these upstart Oregon State hitters thought they were going to drive out of town with two wins in a day, Trevor Gray came along and put them right where he wanted them.

In the palm of his hand.

Gray, a junior right-hander at Cal State Northridge, made long relief look easy in the Matadors' 8-4 win over Oregon State on Sunday afternoon, salvaging a split of the four-game series.

The day didn't start well for CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge , which committed two errors in the 10th inning of an 8-4 loss in the completion of Saturday's game that was suspended because of darkness.

Then left-hander Darryl Grant Darryl Grant (born November 22, 1959 in San Antonio, Texas) is a former professional American football player who played defensive tackle for eleven seasons for the Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL. He played college football for Rice University. , the Matadors' touted transfer from Long Beach State, walked three of the first five Beavers in the regularly scheduled game and was quickly replaced by Gray.

Gray's first pitch was whacked up the middle by Josh Carter for a two-run single. But he recovered to get Garrett Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

With his palmball working well, Gray struck out 10, including the side in the third and fourth innings.

``What the team needed was someone to come in and throw strikes,'' Gray said. ``After the fifth, I had the mindset mind·set or mind-set

 of a reliever.''

CSUN coach Mike Batesole said: ``You've got to get strikes out of your relievers. If you throw strikes, you give yourself a chance to win.''

The Matadors (8-8) scored five times and chased Beavers starter Craig Hayes in the first inning. The Beavers scored an unearned run in the fifth when third baseman third baseman

Eric Horvat misplayed a ground ball, and Oregon State had runners at second and third when Gray got Carter to fly out to center field.

Gray ran into serious trouble again in the eighth, when OSU put runners on first and third with two outs. Andy Davidson Andy Davidson may refer to:

, a freshman left-hander from Hart High, came in and struck out pinch-hitter Joe Gerber, who had 11 home runs last year and one on Friday.

Davidson struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save.

Horvat redeemed his error with a two-run homer in the eighth, his fifth of the season. He knew in this series, in which the teams combined for 54 runs, no lead was safe.

``You have to keep scoring,'' Horvat said. ``(The Beavers) could throw up (six runs) at any time.''

The Matadors are .500 with Washington, a preseason top-20 team, coming to town for a three-game series starting Friday.
