This was supposed to be an easy week for the Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team.

After taking a week off for spring break, the Matadors had planned to return to a Matadome filled with good vibrations from briefly holding the No. 1 national ranking -- the first in program history -- and an 11-match winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

Longtime-nemesis Hawaii was coming to town for a two-match set Tuesday and Wednesday followed by a contest Friday with Hope International.

Then Cody Loe got hurt and everything changed.

Loe, a 6-foot-8 junior middle blocker from Chatsworth High, sprained his knee in practice Friday and was unable to play Tuesday night.

He had been leading the team in blocks and was second in kills.

Without him, No. 2 Northridge struggled to adjust, but still pulled out a 30-28, 41-43, 26-30, 30-22, 15-13 victory over the No. 13 Rainbow Warriors This article is about the ship. For the NASCAR driver sometimes nicknamed "Rainbow Warrior", see Jeff Gordon.

"Cody does a lot more than just get kills and blocks for us," junior outside hitter Eric Vance said. "He's a huge part of the team. When we need a sideout, he's the guy we go to. He's our fire.

"We had to adjust without him. But I feel we're a championship team. And (Tuesday night), we were going to find a way to win."

With Loe in street clothes for at least another week, Vance had to pick up the slack. The former Camarillo High star did a lot more than that, recording 40 kills on 86 swings, both career highs.

His previous career high was 27 kills.

"We've played so well the last month and half, but that was with Cody in the rotation," Matadors coach Jeff Campbell Jeff Campbell (Born August 25, 1979) is a New Zealand soccer player who has represented his country at U20, U23 and senior levels.

Travis Bluemling had 71 assists and outside hitters Isaac Kneubuhl and Kevin McKniff combined for 34 kills for CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge .

The Matadors (18-4) came into Tuesday's matched ranked No. 2, falling onepoint behind top-ranked Penn State in the CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  College Sports/AVCA poll, even though neither team played last week.

The No. 1 ranking was the first for any Northridge program since the school moved to Division I in 1990.
