Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

Call it a cold night for the Penguins, and credit a red-hot Cal State Northridge defense for most of the chill.

team, set school and Big West Conference records with 11 steals and added a game-high 29 points as the Matadors (1-1) forced previously undefeated Dominican (4-1) into 34 turnovers - 23 on steals by Northridge.

The effort left former Palmdale High standout Carr fatigued but happy with the victory that came right out of Matadors coach Bobby Braswell's plan for the game and hope for the season:

`That was our focus,'' the sixth-year Northridge coach said. ``Defend, defend, defend and get some easy baskets.''

Carr, who tied the Matadors old steal record of seven by halftime, said nonstop HP's brand name for its fault-tolerant servers, which range in size from four CPUs to 4,000 CPUs. ``It's in your face pressure the whole game,'' he said. ``You don't have time to relax. You're constantly moving and shifting. It's a lot on your body and a lot on your mind.''

It must have looked even tougher from the Dominican viewpoint, as the pressured Penguins missed their first 10 shots, but which time they had turned the ball over 10 times.

They trailed 17-1 before reserve Trey Putnam (11 points) hit a jump shot with 11:12 left in the first half. Putnam followed on Dominican's next possession with a 3-pointer and finished with 11 points - second to teammate Keith Carroll Car·roll , James 1854-1907.

They finished the first half with 23 turnovers, 15 of those on Northridge steals, as the Matadors generated 24 points off their press. The Penguins shot just 26 percent before halftime and even less - 25 percent - for the game.

``I was very pleased with our defensive tonight,'' said Braswell. ``It's hard to hold a team to 25-26 percent shooting .''

By the end, nine Matadors had contributed at least one steal, and Carr, freshman Chris Davis Chris Davis is the name of a couple of people:
