Phenicie declined to comment about the resignation on the recommendation of his lawyer. He is most concerned about the impact of his departure on the players.

``They were expecting me to be there to help lead them into battle,'' said Phenicie, who turned down a potential job at Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. The university would not say if findings uncovered in the probe led to Phenicie's resignation.

``It's a big campus,'' Chandler said. ``People come and go all the time.''

Matadors coach Ron Ponciano, who will meet with investigators Friday, expressed displeasure about Phenicie leaving.
