They became the first to go home because they hit .174.

Once again, the Cal State Northridge bats failed to show up as Minnesota eliminated the Matadors with a 4-0 victory Saturday at Fresno State.

In two games, the Matadors (37-19) collected just eight hits in 46 at-bats. That's one less than last year, but the result was the same: two and out. In fact, it's the third straight year Northridge has failed to win in a regional.

``You can't hit, you can't win,'' Northridge coach Janet Sherman said. ``And we didn't hit, so we didn't give ourselves a chance.''

In the two games, Big West Conference Player of the Year Chelo Lopez went hitless in six at-bats. Only cleanup batter Elizabeth Sanches and outfielder Jessica Creith, who bats second, collected hits in each game.

It wasn't from a lack of trying. After getting five hits Friday against Cal, Northridge took a long look at itself. The team had several meetings and pep talks Friday night and Saturday morning.

``They wanted to get our hearts into it,'' Lopez said. ``We didn't want it to be our last day playing. It was to get us motivated.''

It didn't matter. Minnesota pitcher Steph Klaviter (20-12) gave up just three hits with one walk and no strikeouts, and allowed just two balls to leave the infield Infield is a widely used term in sports terminology, its meaning depends on in what sport it is used. In baseball

Two of the singles, by Creith and Ashlie Hayes, were close plays at first base that could have been called out.

Sherman said Klaviter jammed the Matadors bats and the players didn't adjust.

``We were trying to tell them to get their hands out and get extended,'' Sherman said. ``Our pitch selection was better than (Friday).''
