CSUN ANALYSIS: CSUN IN MIDDLE OF MUDDIED BIG SKY RACE.

Byline: Marc J. Spears Daily News Staff Writer

It was just a week ago that the Cal State Northridge football team's confidence and Big Sky Conference title hopes took a major jolt after a loss at Portland State.

Today, the Matadors' hopes are revived re·vive

thanks to a victory over Weber State on Saturday night and the weekend's Big Sky action, which ended with everyone owning at least one league loss except for Montana (4-1, 2-0 Big Sky).

``We had to win (Saturday night) if we still want to win league,'' said sophomore quarterback Josh Fiske, who led the Matadors to victory in his second career start with 264 yards passing.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (3-3, 1-1) is in position to help its own cause, but it won't be easy. The rest of the Matadors' schedule includes games at Montana State (3-2, 2-1) Saturday and at Montana (Nov. 1) two weeks later. CSUN will meet two more tough conference foes in host Eastern Washington

The next test will be Montana State, which hasn't lost in two home games this season. The Bobcats are coming off a tough 14-13 loss at Northern Arizona in which a late kick and an interception by the Lumberjacks sealed the victory Saturday night.

The Lumberjacks entered the game ninth in Division I-AA in total offense, averaging 465 yards per game. But the Bobcats' defense kept NAU (1) (Network Access Unit) An interface card that adapts a computer to a local area network.

Offensively, Montana State was led by quarterback Rob Compson, who completed 16 of 25 passes for 177 yards with one touchdown and an interception, while kicker Kicker

Geoff Groshelle nailed two 43-yard kicks.

``(The Bobcats) are good,'' said CSUN coach Jim Fenwick. ``We have to go play in their home. But anybody can beat anybody and we're going to find out a lot about us. (The Weber State win) put us back in the (Big Sky race) at 1-1. Realistically, traveling and going to Montana State will be tough. But it's nice to look forward to it and nice to have the challenge.''

Whether there will be a quarterback controversy this week is to be seen.

In four games, Fiske has completed 57 of 97 passes (58.8 percent) for 684 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. As for Flowers, his passing numbers are monstrous as he has completed 108 of 166 passes (65.1 percent) for 1,539 yards, 14 touchdowns and just four interceptions in four games.

Either way, the Matadors' offense seems to be in good hands next weekend since Flowers is extremely talented and has confidence in his understudy.

``(Fiske) made the plays to win the game (against Weber State),'' said Flowers. ``What can you say? He has great poise even when he has guys falling off of him and he is still making great plays. He played great.''
