CSUN A SASSY 6-4 AFTER WILD VICTORY : CSUN 42, IDAHO ST. 40.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

To the site of one of the program's most embarrassing losses ever the Cal State Northridge football team returned Saturday night, and put the almost-finishing touches on a season that announced this team has arrived.

Despite faltering late in the game, Northridge survived to beat Idaho State 42-40 in front of 6,006 fans at Holt Arena Holt Arena is an indoor multi-purpose athletic stadium located on the campus of Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. It is the home field of the Idaho State Bengals of the Big Sky Conference and sits at an elevation of 4560 feet (1390 m) above sea level.  when Bengals kicker Kicker

James Ferrell's 57-yard field-goal attempt fell a couple of yards short with 32 seconds remaining.

Northridge committed three second-half turnovers, missed two fourth-quarter field-goal tries and gave the Bengals 40 yards on three dead-ball penalties on a late drive that enabled Idaho State to pull to within two points.

But in the aftermath of the monumental win, the gaffes in the final moments meant little to the Matadors, who improved to 6-4 overall, 3-3 in the Big Sky Conference.

``We're winners,'' coach Dave Baldwin Dave Baldwin was the head football coach of San Jose State University from 1997-2000. During his tenure, he had three straight wins over Stanford (including their rosebowl season of 1999). In 1997, SJSU upset No.  said. ``No matter.''

The victory guaranteed Northridge its first winning season in four years in Division I-AA, its first winning season since 1990, and a winning season in its first year in the Big Sky.

in the final game of the season would mean Northridge could finish tied for third in the conference, an event that was considered about as likely as tornadoes in Northridge.

``We're winners,'' echoed linebacker Marc Goodson, whose sack of Shane Griggs with 37 seconds to play might have been the play of the season. ``And that's something this school hasn't had in a long time.''

That it came in Holt Arena, Baldwin said, was not important.

Yeah, right.

In Baldwin's second game as the Matadors' coach last season, Idaho State held Northridge to 117 total yards and beat the confused visitors 52-0. Fans must have left Holt Arena that night wondering what the Big Sky Conference was thinking in inviting these jokers to join the nation's most-exclusive I-AA alliance.

And at times Saturday, Northridge didn't do much to change the locals' opinion.

Northridge scored just once in the second half - on a 38-yard run by Jeramie Thomas 11 seconds into the fourth quarter - and gave the Bengals every opportunity to come back from a 35-26 halftime deficit. The Matadors turned the ball over three times on an interception and two fumbles.

One of the fumbles came on a play that appeared might knock out Idaho State (3-6, 1-5).

With about 1-1/2 minutes to play, Cameron Perry caught an Aaron Flowers pass at midfield, broke a tackle at the Idaho State 30 and then had the ball stripped by Jarmaine Johns at the 18. The ball bounced toward the end zone. After Idaho State's Leon Maycock grabbed it at about the 2, Northridge receiver Jerome Henry ran in and knocked the ball loose. Henry recovered but was hit and fumbled the ball out of bounds.

After huddling for a full five minutes, the officials ruled the ball was Idaho State's on its own 18.

The Bengals drove to the Northridge 31. But Goodson's sack dropped them back to the 40. An incompletion later, Ferrell sent a low liner to the end zone for the potential game-winner.

``I thought it was in,'' Goodson said. ``It was too close.''

It never should have been. But an Idaho State team that started the season with conference-title hopes but is now struggling just to survive because of numerous injuries to star players employed its new philosophy: run and run and run, then pass for the big play. It worked for a time the previous week at No. 8 Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. In the West lies the Grand Canyon, which was cut by the flow of the Colorado River while the land slowly rose around it. . And it worked early against Northridge.

While the Northridge offensive line struggled and failed to keep Idaho State away from Flowers, the Bengals moved scored twice.

But after Ferrell's 40-yard field goal 14 second into the second quarter put Idaho State ahead 10-0, Northridge quieted a charged arena full of people who thought maybe the poor Bengals could finally win a game.

The Matadors scored twice in the next 28 seconds and put up 35 points by halftime.

On Northridge's first play of the second quarter, from the 10-yard line, Flowers passed to David Romines at the 40. Romines proceeded to beat two Bengals in a race to the end zone.

drive, from the 12-yard line, a group of Matadors hit Griggs and popped the ball loose. Strong safety Steve Standifer fell on the ball in the end zone. And just 28 seconds after falling behind by 10, the Matadors led 14-10.

Standifer intercepted Griggs at midfield on the Bengals' next drive, and a 7-yard run by Norman Clarke with 11:35 remaining in the half gave Northridge a 21-10 lead.

After Idaho State pulled to 21-17, Clarke scored again on a 5-yard run with 5:05 to play to make it 28-17.

Ferrell hit a 51-yard field goal to make the score 28-20. But Northridge again extended the lead when Henry caught a short pass over the middle at the Matadors 40, split a group of converging Bengals and ran untouched to the end zone.

NOTEBOOK

POCATELLO, Idaho Pocatello (IPA: [po kə tɛ lo]) is the county seat and largest city of Bannock CountyGR6  - It was all in a night's work for David Romines - albeit a short night's work this time. Romines collected his sixth and final Cal State Northridge receiving record with his 12th touchdown of the season in the Matadors' 42-40 victory over Idaho State on Saturday night.

There are no more school records for Romines to get. That's a good thing as the senior left Saturday's game in the second quarter - after making two catches for 122 yards and a touchdown. Romines aggravated ag·gra·vate

Still going: This record-breaking business is becoming typical work for Aaron Flowers as well.

Unlike Romines, however, Flowers likely has just begun rewriting the books.

It took the junior quarterback three completions to get the 96 yards he needed to break the school record for passing yards in a season. He finished the night 17 of 28 for 431 yards, bringing his total this season to 3,040. The old record of 2,705 was held by Steve Duddy (1982).

Last week against Montana, Flowers threw for a school-record 457 yards. The transfer from Valley College needs just 1,433 more yards to reach the career record of 4,473 set by Bruce Lemmerman from 1965-67. He will likely get the necessary 15 completions next week to break Chris Parker's record of 232 completions in the 1985 season. He needs (two) touchdowns to tie Lemmerman's 1967 record of 27.

Yet another one: Matadors linebacker Marc Goodson made 15 tackles in the game, giving him a school-record 135 for the season.

THE HERO

Cal State Northridge linebacker Marc Goodson. His 10-yard sack of Idaho State quarterback Shane Griggs stopped the Bengals at the 40-yard line with 37 seconds to play.

THE GOAT

Idaho State running back Craig Joseph. His fumble with fumble with vt fusmanosear  7:50 to play stopped his team at midfield and gave Northridge a chance to run time off the clock. (This was a close one. There were at least 10 candidates on both teams.)

STAT OF THE GAME

CSUN's David Romines had 122 yards and a touchdown (his school-record 12th of the season). This on two catches before he left the game with a pulled hamstring.
