CSUN'S CHAIRMAN OF ASTRONOMY MOURNED.Byline: Holly Andres Staff Writer Astrophysicist Adrian D. Herzog, a professor at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , died at his home in Northridge on Feb. 28. He was 53. Herzog began teaching astronomy classes at CSUN in 1981, and was named chairman of the physics and astronomy department in 1996. He directed the development of the new planetarium at CSUN, and designed new instruments and systems of acquiring data for the observatory. During his tenure at CSUN, Herzog conducted research on sunspot activity and the associate energy balance of the sun's outer layers. He earned a degree in astronomy from the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. , in 1970; a master's degree from San Diego State University San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, is the largest and oldest higher education facility in the greater San Diego area (generally the City and County of San Diego), and is part of the California State University system. in 1972; and a doctoral degree in astronomy from New Mexico State University New Mexico State University, at Las Cruces; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered and opened 1889 as a college. It became New Mexico State Univ. of Engineering, Agriculture, and Science in 1958 and adopted its present name in 1960. , Las Cruces, in 1977. Herzog worked on the Very Large Array research at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), federal observatory for radio astronomy, founded in 1956 and operated under contract with the National Science Foundation by Associated Universities, Inc., a group of major universities. while at New Mexico State. He was on the faculty at the University of Wyoming UW is a national research university prominent in the fields of environment and natural resource research, specializing in agriculture, energy, geology, and water resource related fields. in 1978. He taught introductory astronomy classes and was the university's planetarium director. Herzog was born Sept. 10, 1947, in Basel, Switzerland. He grew up in California. He is survived by his wife, Dora. A memorial service was held Wednesday. Donations in his memory can be sent to the Adrian D.
