CST Central Standard Time

) Tuesday introduced a powerful new version of its legacy migration software, GUISys version 3.0.

Available in October 1995, GUISys 3.0 is the only tool on the market that offers fully automatic migration of mainframe (GUISys/3270) and midrange (GUISys/400) legacy applications to a client/server environment A networking environment that is made up of clients and servers running applications designed for client/server architecture. See client/server.  under Windows or OS/2. GUISys is powered by a KnowledgeBase engine which can migrate thousands of screens overnight. GUISys provides an alternative to one of the major problems confronting information systems managers today -- costly re-engineering projects.

The Need for Legacy Migration

The mission-critical information systems in most large corporations consist of mainframe and midrange computers. "In response to demands for increased productivity and reduced operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales , corporate information systems are undergoing a fundamental transformation, moving from centralized computer systems to distributed client/server networks," said Ofer Timor, CST's president, worldwide corporate operations.

"With a worldwide installed base of approximately 40,000 mainframes, 300,000 AS/400s and 300,000 System/36 computers, legacy migration technology is a potentially multibillion-dollar market."

The investment in mainframe and midrange systems is extensive, yet users prefer to work on PCs, since they are flexible, easy to use, have a fast response time, provide a graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to

Nevertheless, when communicating with a legacy system, a PC still has many of the disadvantages of a legacy system, including: a poor user interface, cumbersome uploading and downloading

of data, dependence on communication links running continuously, expensive maintenance and wasted time in training new personnel.

Most companies with mainframe and midrange installations are still operating in this mode because until recently a company's primary migration option was a lengthy re-engineering process; these re-engineering projects are costly, time consuming, disruptive to normal operations Generally and collectively, the broad functions that a combatant commander undertakes when assigned responsibility for a given geographic or functional area. Except as otherwise qualified in certain unified command plan paragraphs that relate to particular commands, "normal operations" of  and have often been considered failures by the companies that initiate them.

GUISys, version 3.0 -- New Features

"One of CST's key objectives in the release of GUISys 3.0 was to make the migration of legacy applications to Windows-based applications as seamless and transparent as possible," said Mike Potts, CST's vice president, North American Operations North American operation Surgical oncology Radical surgery of a 'frozen pelvis', consisting of radical en bloc resection of the uterus and urinary bladder. See 'Frozen pelvis.'. Cf 'All-American' and 'South American' operations. . "CST provides customers with easy-to-use, intuitive business software that gives customers the benefits of a client/server environment without having to rewrite their existing legacy applications."

GUISys uses an expert system KnowledgeBase technology to automatically modernize existing legacy applications faster than any other client/server migration tool available today.

The sophisticated features of the GUISys KnowledgeBase system allows companies to systematically migrate to a client/server environment 100 percent automatically. The GUISys KnowledgeBase accumulates information in a way that is similar to human learning. When analyzing an application screen, the human brain recognizes and interprets the patterns which comprise that screen based on the patterns that it has seen before.

Each new pattern that it encounters is added to the human "KnowledgeBase" for future reference. The GUISys KnowledgeBase imitates the human brain in this respect. GUISys accumulates information on patterns and stores them in its KnowledgeBase.

GUISys comes with an extensive set of standard mainframe and midrange patterns and functionality programmed into the KnowledgeBase. In addition, a company can customize the KnowledgeBase according to according to

the particular standards found in their legacy system. GUISys analyzes the host screens automatically by using the pattern definitions stored in the KnowledgeBase.

As GUISys runs, the KnowledgeBase monitors the flow of an application while it is in use, and analyzes the way the screen is presented to the user. Together with general information such as corporate preferences for formats, GUISys automatically converts the character-based screens into customized Windows-based screens.

GUISys does not change the original program code, does not require the customer to have any programming skills and offers an inexpensive upgrade to a robust client/server environment. This release adds many new features to enhance the integration between the legacy and client/server environment, making it easy to use and flexible to customize. Users can take advantage of new GUISys features such as:

o Multiple Session Support (MSS) -- Ability to run a number of

runtime sessions at once.

o Window Layout -- This new feature allows customers to

automatically implement their own standards of GUI into the

first suggestion of the Window.

o Improved Lists (Subfiles) -- The lists in GUISys are updated

to the latest technology in spreadsheet and tables.

o Right mouse button support for all controls.

To provide companies with a proven migration tool, GUISys 3.0 also includes the same suite of features found in GUISys 2.1:

o GUISys is object-oriented -- GUISys creates objects from

analyzed data and combines them to form a new Windows

application.

o Dynamic GUI -- Recognizes similar screens and converts them

during runtime.

o Full accelerator support.

o Creates graphs from the data in host subfiles, including

invisible pages.

o Automatic application development.

o Automatically generates Visual Basic 4GL source code with use

of VBSys add-on tool.

o Advanced DDS (1) (Digital Data Storage) See DAT.

(2) (Data Dictionary System) See QuickBuild and OpenDDS.

o Multiplatform solution -- migrates mainframe, AS/400 and S/3X

applications.

o Supports Microsoft Windows See Windows.

o Uses Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) for interfacing with other

Windows applications.

o Analyzes any screen style -- SAA-CUA and non-SAA-CUA.

o Uses advanced batch mode to migrate the entire application

o Built-in VTR/400 emulator for midrange computers.

o Advanced color handling.

o User formatting function.

o Advanced message handling.
