CSR Achieves Single-Chip Bluetooth Qualification for Reference Design Module.

Business/High Tech Editors

CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom & RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Dec. 12, 2000

CSR (1) (Customer Service Representative) A person who handles a customer's request regarding a bill, account changes or service or merchandise ordered. Agents in call centers are known as CSRs. See call center.  (Cambridge Silicon Radio) announced today that its reference design module, based on single-chip Bluetooth solution BlueCore(TM)01, has received full qualification from the Bluetooth(TM) qualification body.

This official qualification will provide developers of Bluetooth modules with a pre-qualified design to significantly accelerate product time-to-market. BlueCore is unique as the world's only true single-chip Bluetooth solution to integrate the RF, baseband and host microprocessor on one chip.

"This announcement has a significant implication for our customers designing with BlueCore. The inherent benefits of a highly integrated, qualified single-chip solution means a huge reduction in time and development costs," commented Glenn Collinson, marketing director and co-founder of CSR. He added, "CSR has once again demonstrated the success of its innovative approach to Bluetooth design and implementation."

Earlier this month, ALPS Alps, great mountain system of S central Europe, c.500 mi (800 km) long and c.100 mi (160 km) wide, curving in a great arc from the Riviera coast on the Mediterranean Sea, along the borders of N Italy and adjacent regions of SE France, Switzerland, SW Germany, and  received full qualification for its module, also based on BlueCore01. The ALPS module was the first product using a single chip to receive qualification.

The qualification of a BlueCore-based reference module will provide companies with the confidence to design around CSR's single-chip solution with its inherent cost, space and development-time benefits. Qualification is very important, as only qualified products are allowed to carry the Bluetooth trademark, a guarantee of interoperability with all other Bluetooth products. Qualification of BlueCore on the reference module is key for customers since it provides a `ready-to-go' design for users to implement directly, and thus provides a considerable time-to-market advantage over competing solutions. BlueCore01 can be used in Bluetooth devices for PCs, digital cameras, mobile phones and PDAs.

BlueCore01 is available from stock in development and in pre-production quantities.

Bluetooth will enable manufacturers to add wireless connectivity to their consumer electronics products. It has the potential to create cable-free offices and enable wireless connections to mobile phones, PDAs and laptops. To achieve this, a small, low-cost Bluetooth interface is required; therefore, the industry welcomes the first fully integrated single chip solution to be qualified.

BlueCore01 includes the industry's first integrated CMOS-based radio, baseband and microcontroller A single chip that contains the processor (the CPU), non-volatile memory for the program (ROM or flash), volatile memory for input and output (RAM), a clock and an I/O control unit.  with a fully integrated Bluetooth software stack (1) A stack that is implemented in memory rather than in hardware registers. See stack.

(2) A generic reference to a set of system programs or a set of application programs that form a complete system. See stack.

About CSR

CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) specializes in providing single chip radio devices to the global market for short-range radio communications, including Bluetooth. The company's mission is to create the most highly integrated radio devices available, fabricated fab·ri·cate

1. To make; create.

2. To construct by combining or assembling diverse, typically standardized parts:
using standard CMOS technology, to provide its customers with the low cost of ownership of high quality digital radio.

CSR was the first company to offer a fully integrated 2.4GHz radio, baseband and microcontroller Bluetooth solution on one CMOS chip, with its BlueCore(TM)01. CSR's BlueCore01 is the world's first true single chip Bluetooth solution. Together with the Flash ROM Another term for flash memory. Since flash chips can be updated over and over, the ROM (read only) designation is somewhat misleading. "ROM" is used more to mean not volatile than not changeable. See flash memory.

containing the CSR Bluetooth software stack, it provides a fully compliant Bluetooth solution for data and voice communications. The design is optimized to require very few external RF components to facilitate a rapid design of the motherboard Also called the "system board," it is the main printed circuit board in an electronic device, which contains sockets that accept additional boards. In a desktop computer, the motherboard contains the CPU, chipset, PCI bus slots, AGP slot, memory sockets and controller circuits for the , and therefore the fastest time to market and lower overall cost. BlueCore has received full Bluetooth qualification. More information about CSR can be found on the Web site at www.csr.com.

About Bluetooth

Bluetooth is the codename for a technology specification for low-cost, short-range radio links between mobile PCs, mobile phones and other portable devices. The Bluetooth specification marks the first time that major players in the converging communications and computer industries have defined a radio standard that allows mobile phones, hand-held computers Noun 1. hand-held computer - a portable battery-powered computer small enough to be carried in your pocket
hand-held microcomputer

portable computer - a personal computer that can easily be carried by hand
and PCs to communicate wirelessly with each other without manual intervention from the user. The specification's ability to meet cost/performance needs for an array of applications will be a significant factor in its adoption. Bluetooth is lower in cost than alternative wireless standards and will also often allow a lower cost replacement for cables and connectors, particularly when accounting for installation and maintenance.
