CSR's BlueCore4 for Enhanced Data Rate Bluetooth Now Shipping in Volume.CAMBRIDGE, England -- First Approved Bluetooth V2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) An acronym occasionally used to reflect an advancement in transmission or transfer speed. For example, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR provides a dramatic increase in speed over the previous version. See Bluetooth. End-Product CSR (1) (Customer Service Representative) A person who handles a customer's request regarding a bill, account changes or service or merchandise ordered. Agents in call centers are known as CSRs. See call center. (LSE LSE - Language Sensitive Editor :CSR) has announced that its BlueCore4-external Bluetooth solution, the only Bluetooth solution currently qualified and available for enhanced data rate (EDR) Bluetooth, is now shipping in volume and has already been selected by Dell. The Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Internal Card is offered as an integrated option on the Dell Family notebooks. BlueCore4 for EDR Bluetooth will allow users to benefit from multiple simultaneous Bluetooth connections, 3-times faster data transfer speeds, and lower power consumption than existing Bluetooth. BlueCore4 for v2.0 + EDR is fully backwards compatible See backward compatible. backwards compatible - backward compatibility with existing Bluetooth (v1.1 and v1.2) devices. Bluetooth EDR is ideal for PC applications in that it supports multiple Bluetooth connections. PCs will increasingly be asked to support multiple Bluetooth links as users type on a Bluetooth keyboard and move a Bluetooth mouse while listening to music on a set of Bluetooth stereo headphones Head-mounted speakers. Headphones have a strap that rests on top of the head, positioning a pair of speakers over both ears. For listening to music or monitoring live performances and audio tracks, both left and right channels are required. and synchronising contact details with their phone or using the phone as a modem to connect to an email or internet service. EDR offers a maximum data transfer rate of 3 Megabits per second (unit) megabits per second - (Mbps, Mb/s) Millions of bits per second. A unit of data rate. 1 Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits per second (not 1,048,576). E.g. Ethernet can carry 10 Mbps. (Mbps) - compared to the current 1Mbps for standard rate Bluetooth. This increase in transfer rate also means that, for a given amount of data, the EDR radio will be active up to 3 times less than a standard v2.0 radio, hence reducing power consumption, which greatly benefits battery-dependent mobile devices such as laptop computers. CSR's BlueCore4-external hardware and firmware was qualified in November for v2.0 + EDR including all of the optional EDR features. Because CSR's BlueCore4-External offers support for all EDR features, it presents the ideal solution for PC applications which can benefit from the ability to wirelessly transfer files up to 3-times faster, or to operate multiple high-demand Bluetooth links simultaneously. CSR incorporates all optional features of the Bluetooth specification into its BlueCore products because access to these features is an important consideration for designers when selecting Bluetooth silicon to implement in their products. CSR believes it is 6 months ahead of the competition in being able to supply EDR silicon to customers. Whilst other silicon vendors have recently been reported to have EDR silicon, the fact is that, as of today, only CSR has Bluetooth silicon fully qualified by the BQB BQB Bluetooth Qualification Body BQB Bioengineering Quiz Bowl (BMES) BQB Brother's Quality Bakery (Kearny, NJ) (Bluetooth Qualification Board - a prerequisite before Bluetooth silicon can be supplied) to v2.0 + EDR, and CSR is also the only company to be supplying EDR silicon in volume to its customers. Glenn Collinson, co-founder and Sales Director, CSR, commented, "We expect that customers will migrate rapidly to Bluetooth v2.0+EDR spec to allow end customers to benefit from the multiple Bluetooth links and higher data rates. This migration will mirror other similar trends such as the move from USB USB in full Universal Serial Bus Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer. 1.0 to USB2.0". This fourth generation of BlueCore products further improves on CSR's best-in-class reputation for the ease with which its Bluetooth solutions can be incorporated into circuits and end products. About CSR CSR plc (Cambridge Silicon Radio) is a leading provider of single-chip radio devices for short-range wireless communication. CSR offers developed hardware/software solutions for Bluetooth based around BlueCore, a fully integrated 2.4 GHz radio, baseband and microcontroller.
