The new unit is a major item on the Company's investment plan and is the highest individual investment made by a Brazilian non-governmental public company in 1996. Final negotiations were held March 12, 1996, and the formal agreement will be executed by the parties on March 13, at 3:30 p.m., in the Ariesu Room (5th floor) of the New Otany Tokyo Hotel Tower, in Tokyo, Japan. The winning bid was structured as an international off balance lease which will allow CSN a low cost generation of energy at a global cost of approximately US$240 million. Expenses due to lease payments will be easily compensated for by the progressive reduction in the average cost of the energy ordinarily or·di·nar·i·ly adv. 1. The new energy-generating unit will be ready to operate within 28 months, and will meet 50% of CSN's steel works future energy needs. Apart from evident benefits to the Company as a whole (particularly with regard to energy generation grants and thus to equipment safety), the new thermal power facility will positively impact several economic sectors. With less demand, the national electricity generation system will be able to improve the region's current energy distribution. About 500 new jobs are expected to be generated during construction; environmental protection will also be enhanced, since production process effluents such as steelmaking-generated fuel gases, will be more efficiently eliminated from the atmosphere.
