The intensive workshop is conducted by Summer Study Programs, Inc., a leader in pre-collegiate programs, and held at Penn State University in the beautiful "Big Ten" college town of State College, Pa. Students will come away from the program with a complete picture of what happens from the crime scene through analysis and presentation of evidence. Two sessions will be offered, a three and a half week program from July 5 to July 28, and a six and a half week session from July 2 to August 18. Enrollment runs from now through May 1.

The workshops will be led by Dr. Dan Sykes, Lecturer and Director, Analytical Instructional Laboratories and Forensic Science Program, Penn State. Dr. Sykes and other Penn State forensic instructors will guide and challenge students in the CSI process. They will learn through lectures, laboratory and field activities how to explore, manage, process and preserve evidence. The students will be exposed to the techniques and methods used in private, state and federal crime scene units.

A highlight of the workshop will be a mock murder scene with students asked to analyze all facts and reconstruct all events leading to a logical conclusion.

The curriculum reflects the goals of a forensic scientist stated in Penn State's Web site: "The ability to present an accurate scientific analysis of evidence collected at a crime scene or a scene of personal injury, can mean the difference between bringing the guilty parties to justice or allowing them to go free. A forensic scientist must rely on skill, experience, knowledge and personal ability to present the results of an investigation to the jury in a way that enables them to understand."

Students from more than 43 states and 27 countries have participated in various summer study programs in the sixteen years since Mr. Cooperman founded the company. These summer enrichment programs give high school students a rare opportunity to sample college in an organized and supervised environment. They also participate in a full range of activities including weekend trips, sports and recreation, and evening activities such as shows, rock concerts, dance clubs and movies.

Summer Study Programs offers a wide variety of enrichment classes and classes for credit.
