Under terms of the proposed two-year agreement, which must be ratified by members of the California School Employees Association The California School Employees Association (CSEA) is the largest classified school employees labor union in the United States. CSEA represents more than 230,000 public employees in California.  Unit D and the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, employees would get a 3 percent pay raise - combined with benefits hike and existing bonuses - beginning in July for the 2001-02 school year.

District officials did not have an estimate of the total cost of the contract.

``We were concerned that a possible strike would have affected the end of the school year, so we are pleased that we have been able to reach a fair agreement,'' said CSEA CSEA California School Employees Association

The contract is the last to be negotiated this year by the district. Earlier this spring, the district reached contract agreements with the teachers and principals unions, giving members of United Teachers Los Angeles an average 15.3 percent pay and benefits increase. Members of Associated Administrators Los Angeles received an average 14.5 percent salary-and-benefits hike.

Under terms of the CSEA contract offer, the district agreed to fund 100 percent of the employees' pension contributions, equivalent to a 5.8 percent increase on the salary schedule.

Employees will continue to receive a 2 percent bonus paid in the 2000-01 school year.

Both parties also agreed to create a joint labor-management committee to address workload issues, and the district agreed to double the amount of tuition reimbursement Reimbursement

CSEA officials say they will hold meetings the week of June 18 to explain the contract to their members and will hold a mail-in vote beginning June 20.
