``This is an important contract for CSC because it shows how powerfully our commercial consulting skills can be applied to the needs of the federal government,'' said Van B. Honeycutt, CSC president and chief executive officer.

``Our consultants who specialize in the grocery industry helped us pinpoint the grocery industry's best practices, which allowed us to identify the right technical approach. After a lot of research, we found Shaw's integrated management system to be the right fit.''

CSC will help the Defense Commissary Agency re-engineer its business processes and tailor Shaw's Retail Grocery System -- an integrated system currently used in the company's supermarkets -- to help reduce operating costs.

The automated information-management system will also be used to help the military quickly track functions such as inventory, labor scheduling and direct delivery at each store. In addition, the system will support warehousing at overseas locations for central distribution of products.

Work will be performed by CSC's Integrated Systems Division, based in Moorestown, N.J., and will initially involve about 60 software and system engineers, working out of a program management office in Montgomery, Ala.
