The five-year contract has one base year and four one-year options and is valued at $2.8 million if all options are exercised over the contract period.

COSPAS-SARSAT is an international, humanitarian search and rescue system that uses satellites to detect and locate emergency beacons carried by ships, aircraft or individuals. The system consists of a network of satellites, ground stations, a mission control center and rescue coordination centers.

CSC will provide system engineering and program management support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  to upgrade and maintain the U.S. portion of the COSPAS-SARSAT program. The company will provide expertise in satellite communications and tracking, data acquisition, locator transmitter and beacon design upgrades, and search and rescue procedures.

Services will be performed by CSC's System Sciences Division, which has headquarters in Calverton, Md., and involve computer scientists and spacecraft engineers at the division's facility in Lanham, Md.

NOAA is the lead agency in the U.S. for the COSPAS-SARSAT program, which was created in 1979. The system includes the four original partners -- Canada, France, Russia and the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  -- plus 16 ground segment providers, nine user states and two participating organizations.

NOAA recently signed a new international program agreement with Canada, France and Russia that will continue the program until the year 2003.
