:CSC) Tuesday announced a three-year outsourcing contract with Grossman's Inc., a Braintree, Mass.-based chain of home improvement centers with 100 stores located throughout the northeastern United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

Estimated value of the contract is $3 million over three years.

Under the agreement, CSC will help Grossman's reduce its information technology costs by about 20 percent by running the company's mainframe operations out of CSC's Carlstadt, N.J., data center. Prior to the agreement, Grossman's ran its own data center from its corporate offices.

"Grossman's has set itself apart in a highly competitive market by putting an exceptional focus on customer service," said Van B. Honeycutt, CSC president. "It is known throughout the industry for the innovative ways it is using technology to support customers. We're committed to helping the company build on that tradition."

For example, Grossman's was one of the first retail firms to speed the shipment of stock to stores by putting PCs at each checkstand. Each time a sale is rung, the PCs send sales data in real time to the company's mainframe, which acts as a central inventory database. Exact inventory levels can be automatically reviewed and empty shelves replenished quickly.

"With systems like that, Grossman's is more efficient and customers are better served," said Honeycutt. "Our new partnership will enable them to strengthen their commitment to service and efficiency by paring technology costs as well."

Computer Sciences had $3.1 billion in annual revenues for the 12 months ended Dec. 30, 1994, 55 percent of which came from commercial clients and the rest from the U.S. government.
