CSC signs $63.4 million outsourcing pact with Baker & Taylor.

:CSC (Card Security Code) A three- or four-digit number printed on the back of credit cards for security purposes. Called "Card Verification Value" (CVV) by Visa, "Card Validation Code" (CVC) by MasterCard and "Card Identification (CID) by American Express and Discover, ) Tuesday announced a seven-year contract valued at $63.4 million with Baker & Taylor, a worldwide distributor of books, video, audio, software and related services.

The contract was awarded following CSC's work for the past three years providing systems integration and consulting services Noun 1. consulting service - service provided by a professional advisor (e.g., a lawyer or doctor or CPA etc.)

 to the company.

The agreement calls for CSC to acquire the company's data center operations based in Bridgewater, N.J. CSC will operate and maintain Baker & Taylor's mainframe, network, telecommunications, applications and help-desk operations. In addition, 51 of the company's information systems employees will join CSC.

The company will consolidate Baker & Taylor's information technology operations Information technology operations, or IT operations, are the superset of all processes and services that are both provisioned by an IT staff to their internal or external and used by themselves, to run themselves as a business.  at its data center in Norwich, Conn.

"Our goal in supporting Baker & Taylor is to bring new focus to their IT operations," said CSC president and chief executive officer Van B. Honeycutt. "There's also strong value in the full spectrum of consulting, systems integration and outsourcing services we offer."

Added Gary Rautenstrauch, Baker & Taylor's executive vice president of technology: "Outsourcing our information systems gives us flexibility to adapt new technologies as our needs change. CSC offered the broadest range of technologies and services for us to move forward."

Baker & Taylor, named as one of Forbes Magazine's Top 500 private companies for the past three years including 1995, is a privately held information and entertainment services company. With headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., and operating worldwide, it distributes a wide range of products, including books, video, audio, software and related services to retail stores and libraries.

Computer Sciences had $4.1 billion in annual revenues for the 12 months ended Dec. 29, 1995. The company has headquarters in El Segundo, and has 34,000 employees in 575 offices worldwide.
