CS First Boston is relying on Informix's business and technical support for the success of this project.

In production today, The Global Research Library takes CS First Boston to a new level in electronic distribution of research, a crucial differentiating component among trading companies. Analyst reports and updates of investment vehicles are being distributed today in near realtime on a worldwide basis, via an intranet to traders, and in the future, via the Internet, to selected investors.

The application runs on the Informix Illustra Server with plans to migrate to Informix's Universal Server (an object/relational database server) upon its release later this year. The system operates on Sun hardware and supports several thousand users throughout its worldwide operations, including four major installations in London, New York New York, state, United States

The decision in favor of Informix was made after evaluating the ability to develop Web solutions with Informix's DataBlade modules versus CS First Boston's incumbent database system. Informix was selected for its uniquely integrated technology, as well as the reputation and financial stability of the company.

Michelle Kildunne, a director of Fixed Income Trading Technology at CS First Boston, the Informix solution extends CS First Boston's research distribution capability by providing a globally distributed architecture, platform independence, data integrity, and full text search. CS First Boston also expects Informix's technology to facilitate the development of Web applications.

"Informix provides a completely integrated solution for us through its DataBlade technology -- this was key to our decision," said Kildunne. "There is nothing else commercially available that matches this technology. The alternative was to go with commercially separate products and internally develop the interface between the products for communications, transaction handling, and data integrity. We are looking forward to a robust Universal Server to further give us the differentiating edge needed to quickly and easily deliver subsequent services."

"Our object/relational technologies give First Boston a higher degree of integration between datatypes, and the ability to develop new products and services in significantly less time than possible with any other database tool available today," stated Mike Hall, director of financial industry marketing at Informix. "This means tremendous competitive advantage and customer differentiation for First Boston in the global investment arena."

To fully support CS First Boston on the GRL project, Informix is providing on-site consulting to assist in the design and implementation of the project, and in the process, to transfer Informix's object-relational expertise to First Boston. "The knowledge transfer is important because our DataBlade technology gives customers the flexibility to create new ways of managing information storage and retrieval information storage and retrieval, the systematic process of collecting and cataloging data so that they can be located and displayed on request. Computers and data processing techniques have made possible the high-speed, selective retrieval of large amounts of  of complex data," added Hall.

DataBlade Technology

A DataBlade module is a software component that extends the relational database relational database

to manage new kinds of data. DataBlade modules add domain-specific expertise and key functionality required for native support of specific data types. DataBlade modules "plug-in" directly to the database, making the newly defined types and functions "first-class citizens" in the database. Informix customers may use a single DataBlade module or a number of DataBlade modules simultaneously to create a unique, integrated information management solution customized for their business needs. The Informix Web DataBlade module is an application development and management environment designed specifically for creating dynamic, scalable, multimedia-rich Web applications that enable developers to simply and quickly keep pace with change. The Informix Web DataBlade module allows both Web site content and application logic to be stored centrally in the Informix Illustra Server, enabling Webmasters, Web authors, and programmers to collaborate on application development. Storing all Web assets in a database gives Web sites all the features that databases have long provided to traditional client/server applications: ad-hoc queries, large-scale performance, security, and backup/recovery.

The Informix PLS Text DataBlade module is a text search and management tool that provides sophisticated text analysis and matching capabilities. It was developed by Personal Library Software, Inc., an Informix DataBlade partner and one of the leading providers of standalone text search engines. The PLS Text DataBlade module and the Informix Illustra ORDBMS combine the advanced search algorithms of PLS with the Standard Query Language A generalized language that allows a user to select records from a database. It uses a command language, menu-driven method or a query by example (QBE) format for expressing the matching condition.  (SQL SQL

), storage and security of a relational database. Customers with complex document management needs use the PLS Text DataBlade module to manage large libraries of policies, procedures, orders and forms online, making searches through vast amounts of textual information easy and efficient.
