CRYPTOCard Announces New Software Token that will Enable BlackBerry Handsets to Be Used for Two-Factor Authentication.

OTTAWA -- In response to the rapidly-growing global demand for cost-effective two-factor authentication The use of two independent mechanisms for authentication; for example, requiring a smart card and a password. The combination is less likely to allow abuse than either component alone. See authentication.  for mobile users, CRYPTOCard (www.cryptocard.com), the leading authentication technology developer for heterogeneous environments, today announced that it plans to release a software token A software token is a type of two-factor authentication security device that may be used to authorize the use of computer services. Software tokens operate on a general purpose electronic device like a desktop computer, laptop, PDA, or mobile phone.  for BlackBerry(R) handsets from Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ NASDAQ

The software token will enable remote users logging into the corporate network from a PC or laptop via a VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  to use their BlackBerry handset to generate the necessary credentials for two-factor authentication.

Simple to install on any BlackBerry handset, the all-new software token will enable users to utilize their handset to generate a random one-time password (something only they have) which when combined with their unique device password (something only they know) will make it easier to positively authenticate themselves to the corporate network. As a result, BlackBerry users will no longer have to carry a separate device for two-factor authentication, while corporations will benefit by lowering the security costs associated with purchasing and managing hardware tokens.

Developed to meet real-world security requirements, CRYPTOCard's event-based two-factor authentication technology eliminates inherently-weak static passwords by generating a one-time password for every log-on attempt - making stolen credentials useless to hackers. One-time passwords also eliminate the need for users to memorize complicated credentials - significantly reducing the help-desk costs associated with resetting forgotten passwords, and the security risk resulting from users writing them down.

"An organization cannot guarantee system security if each user cannot positively identify themselves to the corporate network, and CRYPTOCard's new token makes it easy for users to utilize their BlackBerry handset to do just that," explained Jason Hart, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , CRYPTOCard Europe. "CRYPTOCard prides itself on providing innovative solutions to real-world business problems, and by enabling BlackBerry handsets for use as a two-factor authentication token, CRYPTOCard's new software provides positive user identification without having to carry an additional device."
