CRUSOE-BASED NOTEBOOK INTRODUCED BY NEC.

NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
has introduced a three-pound notebook computer that will operate up to 11 hours on battery power using Transmeta's Crusoe microprocessor.

Since early September, Sony, Fujitsu and now NEC have introduced Crusoe-based notebooks. Transmeta's microprocessor is unique in its capability to extend battery life by using software to adjust voltage and frequency on-the-fly, consuming only the amount of power needed for maximum efficiency.

"NEC is very impressed with the battery life and performance capabilities provided by Crusoe," said Osamu Iseki, senior manager, product planning department, mobile I solution division, NEC Corporation. "The LaVie MX will give consumers an exceptional mobile computing experience."

The LaVie MX, new to NEC's LaVie series, will incorporate a 600MHz Crusoe microprocessor. The notebook runs Windows 2000 and measures 10.4" x 8.3" x less than 1" (thick). This lightweight design houses a 20 gigabyte hard drive, 128 megabytes of SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. SDRAM chips eliminated wait states by dividing the chip into two cell blocks and interleaving data between them.  and has a 10.4" reflective TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film.

"NEC engineers have done a brilliant job of incorporating the latest advanced mobile technology from Japan," said Jim Chapman, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Transmeta Corporation. "They have integrated that technology with Crusoe to create a perfect mobile, professional notebook that delivers all day computing."

Founded in 1995, Transmeta is a privately held company privately held company

based in Santa Clara, California Santa Clara, California (IPA: /ˌsæntəˈklærə/) , founded in 1777 and incorporated in 1852, is a city in Santa Clara County, in the U.S. state of California. . Transmeta develops, in concert with its OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  customers, platform solutions for the mobile Internet computing market. Transmeta markets and sells the Crusoe processor solution as the engine for a new class of computers. Crusoe is the only x86 compatible processor solution built to run the large installed base of PC software applications with high performance and extremely long battery life.
