CRUISE SHIP FIRST OF 3 FOR INGALLS CONSTRUCTION DEAL WORTH $1.4 BILLION.

So far, Ingalls has 21 assemblies for the first ship in various stages of construction and a number of pipe packages have been constructed. All four main engines have arrived as well as two 100-ton fin stabilizers.

The last passenger ships built in the United States were the SS Argentina and the SS Brasil in 1958.

American Classic Voyages, the largest American cruise company, announced the deal with Ingalls on Tuesday as part of two analyst meetings being held aboard the company's newest ship, the ms Patriot.

Phillip Calian, the company's chief executive officer, said the meetings allow American Classic to introduce its new cruise line A cruise line is a company that operates cruise ships. The ship was in Los Angeles for the beginning of a series of activities that will introduce almost 6,000 travel agents to the new cruise line. The ms Patriot will sail to San Francisco before departing for its homeport of Honolulu on Dec. 9.

``We are excited about the ms Patriot and the return of United States Lines to the marketplace,'' Calian said in a statement.

American Classic shares closed Tuesday down 0.06 cents, or 0.43 percent, to $14.31 on volume of 26,600 shares traded on the Nasdaq exchange. Shares of Litton Industries lost 0.38 cents, or 0.63 percent, to close at $59.69 on moderate volume of 354,709 shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
