The Crues and Amateur League club Newington unveiled their plans in front of politicians, IFA chief Howard Wells, interested business parties and assorted dignitaries in Belfast yesterday.

And Baxter says the proposed 'community stadium and sports education village', which plans to include hotel, restaurant and conference facilities at either the Valley or Grove playing fields, would boost North Belfast on two fronts.

Newington boss Eamon McCarthy said both clubs are determined to use their deep roots in sport across north Belfast and Newtownabbey to good effect.

"We can use that strength to manage one of the few potential shared spaces in the area," he said.

IFA chief executive Wells added: "This is a very important development, not only for football, but the wider community."

Crusaders, who plan to sell their current Shore Road home, and Newington will lobby Belfast and Newtown abbey councils, seeking partnership in the future development of the project.

Mark Langhammer, a member of the Stadium Working Group, said: "Our vision is well founded.
