CROWDS GATHER FOR VICTIMS OF NAZIS.

Several thousand people gathered in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Sunday for one of the nation's largest Holocaust Rememberance Day ceremonies at the Sinai Temple on Wilshire Boulevard Wilshire Boulevard is one of the principal east-west arterial roads in Los Angeles, California, United States. It was named for H. Gaylord Wilshire (1861-1927), an Ohio native who made and lost fortunes in real estate, farming, and gold mining. .

Themed ``Memories of Courage,'' the event featured addresses by Gov. Gray Davis and Ambassador Dennis Ross Dennis B. Ross is an American author and political figure who served as the director for policy planning in the State Department under President George H.W. Bush and special Middle East coordinator under President Bill Clinton. , who was instrumental in orchestrating the 1995 Interim Agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Richard Mahan, one of the organizers of the Los Angeles event, said in the gathering to remember the 6 million Jews who perished, it was important to remember the lessons of the Holocaust.

``It is important today more than ever in light of what is going on in the Middle East for the world to stand strong in support of Israel's need to stop terrorism and pursue peace,'' Mahan said.

Israel's consul general in Los Angeles, Yuval Rotem, received a three- minute standing ovation after he spoke on the challenges of peace for the Jewish people.

Rotem talked about how Jews have and will continue to live a life of hope, and he spoke of the need for the state of Israel to defend itself and for America to stand strong with Israel.

The Remembrance Day, also known as Yom ha-Shoah, is observed shortly after Passover in Israel and by Jewish communities worldwide to remember those who died in the Nazi Holocaust.

It will be followed next weekend by celebrations of the founding of the state of Israel, or Israel's Independence Day.

This year in Los Angeles, Israel's Independence Day will be celebrated by thousands of people at an Israeli Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Woodley Park.
