injuries, San Fernando police cited 69 drivers Thursday for failing to stop at crosswalks.

The four-hour sting was designed to educate drivers about a problem that police said has worsened, with three serious pedestrian incidents within just eight days last month.

``The idea is to get people to stop running over pedestrians,'' said Sgt. Mike Harvey. ``We're just lucky we haven't gotten people killed. Old folks, kids - it's pretty bad.''

The sting involved two police Explorer Scouts

The fine for failure to stop at a crosswalk is $139, or higher if a second offense.

In 1999, 21 pedestrians were hit by cars in San Fernando, compared to 20 in 1998. But between Jan. 20 and Jan. 28, there were three serious incidents, including two on Jan. 28 only blocks away from each other, Harvey said.

A Jan. 20 incident involved a 13-year-old crossing South Brand Boulevard in a crosswalk.
