CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: QUARTZ HILL MANAGES TO RETAIN GOLDEN LEAGUE TITLE.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

The Quartz Hill High girls' cross country team weathered its share of adversity in Wednesday's Golden League finals but managed to retain its league title.

Sophomore Shell Blevins won in 21 minutes, 32 seconds over the 3.2-mile course at Pearblossom Park in Littlerock for a 12-second victory over teammate Katie Schettig. Blevins was questionable for Wednesday's meet because of bursitis bursitis (bərsī`təs), acute or chronic inflammation of a bursa, or fluid sac, located close to a joint. In response to irritation or injury the bursa may become inflamed, causing pain, restricting motion, and producing more fluid than can  in her left hip that slowed her to a crawl in the Mt. Jennifer Yadon, the Rebels' No. 2 runner who was suffering from the flu, did not finish after collapsing 50 yards from the finish because of dehydration. But an eighth-place finish by Kim Harrill, in 23:36, helped the Rebels total 40 points to notch a 12-point victory over Lancaster and Highland.

Lancaster and Highland tied with 52 points with Lancaster finishing second on the basis of a faster sixth runner. The top three teams advanced to the Southern Section Division I preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College on Nov. 14.

The Lancaster boys also defended their Golden League title to win the school's second ever league cross country title. The Eagles had six runners among the top eight to coast to a 20-61 victory over Quartz Hill. Palmdale was third with 63.
