CROSS COUNTRY RAMIREZ LOOKS GOOD AS GOLD HIGHLAND JUNIOR FAVORED TO WIN LEAGUE TITLE AGAIN.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Cassie Ramirez is the one to watch in today's Golden League cross country finals at Rattlesnake rattlesnake, poisonous New World snake of the pit viper family, distinguished by a rattle at the end of the tail. The head is triangular, being widened at the base. The rattle is a series of dried, hollow segments of skin, which, when shaken, make a whirring sound.  Hill. But the Highland High junior might not be the best one to follow.

Ramirez, the defending league champion, took a wrong turn while leading a Division I race at prestigious Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Ramirez is hoping the excitement of today's race will be limited to the challenge from a strong contingent from host Quartz Hill.

``I think it is going to be one heck of a race,'' Ramirez said. ``All the (Quartz Hill) girls are always right there packing it up.''

The Rebels, ranked sixth in the state, were runaway winners in both league meets with seniors Jenny Yadon, Katie Schettig and Jenny Groman, sophomore Tarah Novelli and freshmen Amanda Morgan, Amanda O'Neal and Lacey lac·ey

Ramirez faded to third in the first league meet after being overtaken by eventual winner Yadon. But Ramirez rebounded to win the second meet.

``(Yadon) gave me that extra push,'' Ramirez said. ``I was upset because I did not lose because I was training hard. I just gave up first place. Obviously, I learned to push it until the end.''

Highland has a strong duo with Ramirez and senior Kelsey Wright. Wright finished third in the second league meet and was the runner-up to Ramirez in the Mt. SAC Invitational. Lancaster has superior depth with juniors Gidget Vaughan and Dedra Johnson, who finished fourth and ninth, respectively, in last year's league final.

In the boys' competition, three-time defending champion Lancaster is the heavy favorite. The Eagles are led by John Lanigan, winner of the first two league meets, and junior Ryan Rogers, the defending league champion.

Paul Sparks of Littlerock, Daniel Bauder of Palmdale and Quartz Hill's John Kitahara and B.J. Bokkheimer are also contenders.
