CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: OAK PARK BOYS, GIRLS CHASING HISTORY DOUBLE STATE CHAMPS BID TO BECOME 1ST TO ACCOMPLISH FEAT BACK-TO-BACK.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

Make no mistake, the Oak Park High cross country team knows it could make history this year as the first program to sweep boys' and girls' team titles at the state championship for a second consecutive year.

``In one sense, it's unfathomable,'' coach Kevin Smith said. ``But in another sense, that's something that's out there.''

A year ago, the Eagles became only the third school (joining San Pasqual and Nordhoff of Ojai) to win boys' and girls' championships in the same year. But almost as soon as the celebration in Fresno ended, the talk of a repeat started.

Oak Park returns seven of its top 10 runners combined from the boys' and girls' teams. Both teams also are ranked No. 1 in Div. IV to start the season. At the very least, the Eagles have a chance.

The Oak Park girls, who return their top four runners from last season, will be trying to win their third consecutive title. Senior Lauren Morales, the Daily News' 2002 Runner of the Year, returns, as does junior Tatiana Camacho and senior Allison Banks.

On the boys' side, junior Ken Brook has had a strong summer, according to according to

Smith. Brook took fourth in the state last year and should contend for the state title as a senior. He will be joined by fellow junior Jordan Page and senior Daniel Jacobs Dan Jacobs (born 1942) an internationally acclaimed jazz trumpet recording artist, composer and producer who has toured extensively worldwide with various groups.[1] He also plays flugelhorn. .

Smith said Oak Park will know how it matches up statewide by late September. Here is an overview of the rest of the area:

--Boys: After winning the first state title in school history last season, Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  was dropped from Div. I to Div. II. The Cubs graduated three of their top four runners but return junior Mark Matusak, who finished third in the state as a sophomore.

Matusak is expected to be one of the area's most highly recruited college prospects the next two years. And Loyola coach Lalo Diaz has tried to prepare him for the process.

``He can't let any of that get to him and change him in any way,'' Diaz said.

Matusak is expected to battle Woodbridge of Irvine senior Michael Haddan for Southern Section and state titles. Loyola also returns junior Matt Miller, the No. 5 runner from last year.

Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  is poised for a big year in Div. I. The Highlanders graduated Tim Hearst but return Dylan Jaedtke and Jason Pedersen. Fellow Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  has tried to bolster its boys' program and will feature junior Axel Ambriz.

Canyon should improve on its sixth place state Div. I finish from a year ago with a team that coach Dave DeLong said might be his best with which to work. Senior Jace Getskow, a four-year varsity runner, and senior Alex Harris will pace the Cowboys. ``This is the kind of team where if you meet five days a week,'' DeLong said, ``you know on the sixth they're out running on their own. They're such a group of hard-working, dedicated kids.''

Canyon's lineup also will include juniors Brian Moore Brian Moore may be:
  • Brian Moore (novelist) (1921-1999)
  • Brian Moore (commentator) (1932-2001)
  • Brian Moore (rugby player) (born 1962)
  • Brian Moore (politician), a candidate for Florida's 2006 Senate election
and Thomas Werner. Sophomore Adam McDonald is a star on the rise, DeLong added, after a standout track season.

In the City Section, Birmingham of Lake Balboa senior Mehdi Taieb-Brahim is a favorite to win the City championship, something not done by a Patriots runner since Alvaro Mejia in 1991 and 1992. Taieb-Brahim took third a year ago and could contend for all-state honors.

Monroe of North Hills lost two-time City champion Manuel Ruiz Manuel Ruiz Pérez (born December 3, 1962 in Jerez de la Frontera) is a Spanish football coach and former player.

During his football career, he played for several clubs including his childhood club Xerez CD, UD Melilla and Sanluqueño.

Camarillo coach Mike Smith said his team is the strongest in 10 years and could win the Pacific View League. Seniors Pete Smith Pete Smith may refer to:

--Girls: Call them the Canyon High super sophomores. They might just be the best class in history at one of the state's top programs. ``You just don't get that much quality all showing up at the same time very often,'' DeLong said.

The Cowboys enter the season ranked second in the state in Div. I with a strong senior class of Alysia Johnson, Leanne Riggin and Lauren Walker. But the Cowboys' season will hinge in large part on how the eight sophomores vying for spots on the varsity perform.

In addition, Courtney Granger and Kalyn English are looking to build on strong seasons as freshmen on varsity. Fellow sophomores Amanda Mockenhaupt and Tia Blythe also could be on the varsity by season's end Season's End are a British band based in Hampshire. They describe themselves as playing Progressive symphonic metal[1], although they are often tagged as a gothic metal band by reviewers and reference sources[2][3]. .

DeLong said this year's Canyon team is more talented than the one that won the 1995 Southern Section and state championships. The Canyon girls will get a taste of how they stack up nationally Sept. 27 when they travel to the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C.

``Between the young kids and the older kids, we thought this might be one of the better teams we'll have,'' said DeLong, who asked for and received an invitation to the prestigious meet. ``We decided it was something we should do.''

Birmingham coach Scott King Scott Glenndale Martin King (born June 25, 1967 in Thunder Bay, Ontario) was a professional ice hockey goaltender. He played in only two National Hockey League games for the Detroit Red Wings, but is known for his great play for the Toledo Storm.  calls this year's team the strongest in his 16 years at the school and potentially the best in City Section history. The Patriots lost senior Jennifer Mobarez but return sophomore Emmaline Hartel and senior Marina Santana.

Hartel won the City title in the 3,200 meters and Santana is the reigning West Valley League champion. What sets King's team apart, though, is the addition of sophomores Jocelyn Oviedo and Jennifer Hernandez, who both won frosh/soph track titles but didn't run cross country last season.

Royal features a sister act in senior Morgan Noe and sophomore Devin Noe plus junior Erin Roesinger. Agoura senior Lisa Novik trains with the Chargers boys' team and will be one of the Marmonte League's top runners.

Highland will look to repeat as Golden League champion, although the Bulldogs will have only one Ramirez sister to rely on. Sophomore Sara Ramirez returns and Highland wants to avoid a repeat of last year, when the team lost a spot in the section finals by one point.

The biggest wild card is Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, which finished second in the section but was moved up from Div. IV to Div. III based on preliminary enrollment figures. The Wolverines could move down next month when those figures are finalized.

As a freshman, Bridget Ballard won the Div. IV championship and Harvard-Westlake teammate Lindsay Flacks was out with a groin injury. Flacks won the section title in 2001 as a freshman and the two represent the area's best 1-2 punch, including larger schools.

La Reina La Reina (Spanish: "The queen") is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It consistently ranks in the top five communes with the best quality of life in the Metropolitan Region.  of Thousand Oaks senior Katie Gose was second in the section and third in the state Div. IV. Gose will be one of the favorites to win the Ventura County championship Oct. 31 at Lake Casitas.
