CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: KIRKENDALL CAN RUN - AND RECRUIT; LANCASTER STAR WORKS TO PUT GIRLS' TEAM TOGETHER.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Rosanna Kirkendall has yet to reach peak form this fall, but the Lancaster High girls' cross country team is in good shape thanks to the Eagles senior.

In hopes of building a competitive team, Kirkendall, the team's No. 1 runner, has hit the campaign trail the past two seasons and recruited the majority of the Lancaster girls' team, including the entire varsity. Dawn Dziuban, the Lancaster co-coach along with Lisa Williams Lisa Williams (born in Birmingham, England) is a self-described medium and clairvoyant starring in a show on Lifetime called Lisa Williams: Life Among the Dead. ``We can put up all the cool posters we want to attract runners, but there is nothing like have a teen-ager your own age to recruit,'' Dziuban said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

In addition to Kirkendall, the Eagles return senior Crystal Shuping, juniors Meling Cabral and Krystal Schneider and sophomore Gidget Vaughan. The five will be joined by sophomore first-year runners Dedra Johnson and Ashley Parker.

``We're having team goals now that we have a team,'' Kirkendall said. ``We're really concentrating on packing not really too much individual stuff.''

Kirkendall still figures to play a key role in the Lancaster's success. In track last spring, Kirkendall timed a school-record and Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Kirkendall, who has yet to win a Golden League cross-country title, is hoping to translate her track success to cross country this fall. She has scaled back her training this summer in order to peak for the Southern Section and state championships in November after peaking during the early-season meets as a junior.

Last season, Kirkendall ran double workouts and raced nearly every weekend, but her performances deteriorated throughout the season after impressive early showings. Kirkendall, who was fourth in the league finals, qualified for the Southern Section Division I finals but finished a disappointing 66th.

``I think it matters more at state to make sure I am in good shape, rather than be in perfect shape now and then burning out at state,'' Kirkendall said. ``I was in top shape for the first three races, but by the time CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing.
