CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK STRONG EVEN WITHOUT STAR.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Jynnifer Wright, Desert Christian High's top girls' cross country runner, might be lost for the season, but it was hard to tell at the Bell-Jeff Invitational at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America.  last Saturday.

won the Division V team race for its third consecutive team title, 42-122 over Bell-Jeff, in the 27th annual meet. This despite the absence of the Wright, who had hernia surgery the previous day.

Wright, who finished 10th in the 1999 state Division V final in leading the Knights to fourth overall, will not be able to return until November at the earliest.

A 10th consecutive league title does not appear in jeopardy without Wright, but the Knights' bid for state-meet berth for the fourth year in a row depends heavily on the her status.

Desert Christian's team time of 104:01 at the Bell-Jeff Invitational was more than 11 minutes faster than runner-up Bell-Jeff (1:55:53). The cumulative time for the Knights' five scoring runners, however, was more than six minutes slower than the team's 1999 time of 1:38:10, despite cooler temperatures.

``We have a deep team, but we're not quite as strong,'' Desert Christian coach Dean Spoelstra said. ``We don't want to put any undue pressure on her and want her to get back to health. It is the end of the season where we'll need her, even if she is not at 100 percent.''

Wright, who ran in Desert Christian's first two races in the Seaside Invitational and the High Desert Invitational, began experiencing lower- abdominal pain Abdominal pain can be one of the symptoms associated with transient disorders or serious disease. Sophomore Claytonia Tarazi has picked up the slack for Wright, moving into the No. 1 spot for the last two races. At Bell-Jeff, Tarazi was fourth in 19:58 over the 2.8-mile course.

Desert Christian, which travels to Lucerne Lucerne (lsûrn`), Ger. Luzern (ltsĕrn`), canton (1993 pop.  Valley for its first Desert Mountain League meet today, had four runners among the top 10. Seniors Bethany Spoelstra (20:18) and Deann Matteson (20:59) were seventh and ninth and Melissa Barnes in 10th in 21:17.
