CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK RIGHT TO THE POINT TRANSFER HAS EARLY IMPACT FOR CANYON.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

It did not take long for senior Nick Zoetewey to make an impact in his debut for the Canyon High cross country team in the Woodbridge Invitational in Irvine on Saturday.

A day after learning his appeal for a hardship transfer waiver had been granted by the Southern Section, the Saugus transfer posted the fastest time of the meet by a Canyon runner, finishing sixth in the boys' Division I senior race.

``It is such a relief,'' Zoetewey said. ``To be honest, I thought it would be awhile. I thought eventually I would get my eligibility but I did not think it would be this quick. I was always questioning when I was training. Am I going to be running this year? It is just great to have no restrictions.''

Led by Zoetewey's 15-minute, 16-second clocking over the 3-mile course at Woodbridge High, Canyon finished second in the team sweepstakes in the 150-team meet with a collective time of 1:18:34. The Cowboys' cumulative time for its first five runners was five seconds behind winner Long Beach Poly, the top-ranked team in Southern Section Division I and the No. 7 team in the nation.

``I have a really good feeling about this year because Nick is eligible,'' said Canyon junior Jameson Mora MORA, In civil law. Boosted by the addition of Zoetewey, Canyon moved from fifth to third in the Southern Section Division II rankings and solidified itself as contender for its first state meet berth since 1992.

In warm and humid conditions, Mora and Luke Llamas were first and third in the junior race in 15:16 and 15:33. Ryan Morgan was second in the sophomore race in 15:42 with Mark Bingham Mark Kendall Bingham (May 22, 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA– September 11, 2001 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, USA) was an American public relations executive who founded his own company, the Bingham Group.  in 20th to round out the Cowboys' top five.

The arrival of Zoetewey is just in time for the defending Foothill League champion Cowboys, who have their first league meet at Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi²  on Sept. 28.

``It is like another burst of energy,'' Luke Llamas said. ``He is going to push us all because he is a great runner.''

The Southern Section ruled in July that Zoetewey was ineligible for varsity competition. Fast company: The Canyon girls also made a jump in the Division II rankings - from fifth to second - based on a strong showing at Woodbridge.

Paced by Jazmin Treadway's 10th-place finish and a 13th-place showing by Brenda Stevens in the Division I race, Canyon finished fourth in the team sweepstakes with a team time of 1:36.39, behind Peninsula, Murrieta Valley and Woodbridge.

Peninsula and Murietta Valley are the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Southern Section Division I and Woodbridge is top-ranked in Division II.

Newbury Park is third in Division III and could challenge four-time defending Marmonte League champion Thousand Oaks with seniors Brandon Nakagawa, Warren Livingston, Joe La Seca and Alex Omoto and junior Randy Smith.

The Panthers defeated Agoura, Burbank, Camarillo and Crescenta Valley in a nonleague meet to start the season. Newbury Park was the dominant team in the small-schools division of the nonscoring Ojai Invitational, when they got fourth- and fifth-place finishes by Nakagawa and Smith.

Quartz Hill, which produced the top team time in the season-opening Seaside Invitational, had another strong outing from freshman Lacey Troth (third), seniors Katie Schettig (fourth) and Jenny Yadon (fifth) and sophomore Tarah Novelli (eighth) in the large-schools race.
