Canyon High turned in Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  record efforts in the boys' and girls' team sweepstakes at the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. The Cowboys did not come away with a championship, but their combined boys' and girls' team times produced the top mark by any school in the 53rd annual meet. It was possibly the Southern Section's top one-day performance ever in the largest high school cross country competition in the nation.

``We're not trying to win the boys' or win the girls','' Canyon coach Dave DeLong said. ``We're trying to win them together. We're trying to be the best team ever.''

The Canyon boys, the state's top-ranked Division II team, stayed with Long Beach Poly, the state's top Division I team, through four runners. The Cowboys finished with four runners among the top 17 to finish second in a competition featuring nine of the state's top 10 teams in Division I.

Canyon senior Nick Zoetewey was fourth in 15:13 over the hilly, 2.95- mile course. Juniors Luke Llamas (15:19) and Jameson Mora MORA, In civil law. Sophomore Ryan Morgan (15:34) and freshman Mark Bingham Mark Kendall Bingham (May 22, 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA– September 11, 2001 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, USA) was an American public relations executive who founded his own company, the Bingham Group.  (16:39) rounded out the Cowboys' scoring in 17th and 86th for a team time of 78:10.

The time shattered Canyon's school record of 80:30 set in 1982.

Canyon's girls finished sixth, led by the 10th- and 13th-place efforts of junior Jazmin Treadway and sophomore Brenda Stevens in career bests of 18:22 and 18:26, respectively. Freshman Lauren Walker (18:53), Alysia Johnson (19:29) and Leanne Riggin (19:40) completed the scoring.

The Canyon girls, who moved from third to second in the latest state rankings, set a school record of 94:52 that was 1:06 faster than the mark posted by the Cowboys' 1995 state Division I championship team.

Treadway said she had other motivation than trying to be in vogue with the dark shades. She did not run with her ordinary glasses for fear of bending their thin frames.

``I could not see,'' Treadway said. ``I am not that blind, but I can still see clearer if I have glasses on. It has made it easier for me to see long distance. Hopefully, when I get contacts, it will alleviate the problem.''

Smith qualified for the world junior meet by placing second in the USATF USATF United States of America Track and Field (governing body for T&F, Race Walking & Distance Running)  junior nationals in Denton, Texas, in June with a school record 57.07.
