CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: TOUGH HEAT FOR SAUGUS GIRLS TODAY.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

The Saugus High girls will run the same course as every other cross country team at the Southern Section preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

The Centurions, who qualified for the prelims by finishing second at the Foothill League finals last week, will run in the second, and toughest, of four Div. I heats. The heat includes No. 2 Fountain Valley Fountain Valley, city (1990 pop. 53,691), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1957. Chiefly residential, Fountain Valley also has diverse manufactures, including apparel, computer equipment, semiconductors, and medical equipment. Despite the overload See information overload and overloading.  of top teams, Saugus coach Christian Standley is confident the Centurions can compete for one of four spots in the Southern Section finals next Saturday. He believes the team is capable of a lot more than it has shown so far this season.

``We're a better team than we are on paper,'' Standley said. ``If we just run well, if we don't drop off, we'll be OK.''

Saugus' Chelsea Johnstone has come on strong recently, including a fourth-place finish at the league finals, after being plagued by back problems. Hannah Frick is returning to full strength after discovering an iron deficiency iron deficiency A relative or absolute deficiency of iron which may be due to chelation in the GI tract, loss due to acute or chronic hemorrhage or dietary insufficiency Sources Meat, poultry, eggs, vegetables, cereals, especially if fortified with iron; per the .

``Both of them ran better at league,'' Standley said.

And, of course, there's always top Saugus runner Shannon Murakami. She finished second to Hart's Brooke Russell at the league finals and likely will run at the front of the pack today with Craft and Sperry.

--Feast or famine: The Canyon girls' team made out much better than its Foothill League neighbor Saugus.

The Cowboys, ranked No. 6 in Div. I, run in the third Div. I heat of the day. Only Murrieta Valley is ranked higher, and there are few top teams in the heat.

``We're happy,'' Canyon coach Paul Broneer said. ``We're not going out to win anything. just to qualify. Our goal is to get in the top four.

Canyon will likely rest two runners - which two will be a race-time decision - so the team is prepared for next week's Southern Section finals. There are nine Cowboys capable of finishing in the top five spots.

Now that all the runners finally are healthy, keeping everyone happy has been the challenge.

``It's hard for them,'' Broneer said. ``But they understand the real strength of our team is our depth.''

--Cowboy up: The Canyon boys' team will need its No. 3 runner to come up big to advance to the Southern Section finals. While Adam McDonald and Tommy Werner Tommy Werner (born March 31 1966) was a freestyle swimmer from Sweden. He won the silver medal in the Men's 4x200 m Freestyle Relay at the 1992 Summer Olympics together Christer Wallin, Anders Holmertz and Lars Frölander. Clubs

 a month into the season.

Benmohammed, a transfer, only recently showed how fast he can go, finishing second to McDonald at the league finals.

``He's the key,'' Broneer said. ``If he runs right with Tommy and Adam, we're looking good.''

--Where's Russell? Russell, the Foothill League individual champion, will run in the first of the four girls' Div. I heats. Seemingly rounding into form at the perfect time, Russell will compete against top teams from Ventura, Royal and Warren.
