CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: SAUGUS RUNNER DISCOVERS HE'S GOOD AT GOING DISTANCE.Byline: Sean Martin Sean Martin may refer to:
Derek Somerville began attending Saugus High cross country practices earlier this year to build endurance for track - he runs the 400 meters - and prepare for a possible move to the 800 next spring. He's starting to see he might be better suited for middle distances. Somerville finished second in Wednesday's Foothill League meet at Central Park, covering the 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 37 seconds - eight seconds behind Hart's Alfredo Coronado. Somerville trailed Coronado by 20 seconds after the first mile and 10 seconds one mile later. He never got much closer to Coronado, saying he'd spent his energy too early. Somerville usually is a strong finisher because of the speed he needs for track. He blamed inexperience Inexperience See also Innocence, Naïveté. But Somerville is understandably happy with his progress. ``I just wanted to be in the top half of our varsity,'' he said. ``Now, I'm near the top of the league.'' --Mistaken identity: A girl in a blue-and-white uniform was leading as the runners in Wednesday's Foothill League meet neared the finish line. A familiar sight. ``Here comes Shannon,'' several onlookers shouted as the runners entered the final stretch of the Central Park course, awaiting the arrival of to Saugus' Shannon Murakami, the league's dominant runner. Instead, it was Saugus sophomore Katie Dunn, No. 2 in the Centurions' 1-2 punch. Fans quickly realized their mistake. A sense of excitement and confusion was apparent in their voices as Dunn finished in 18:19, eight seconds ahead of Murakami. The humble sophomore had mixed emotions about finishing first - and beating her team's captain. ``I'm happy and overwhelmed,'' Dunn said. --Get mad: Canyon's boys finished second Wednesday, an impressive improvement from their fourth-place finish at the first league meet. ``The kids got mad (after the first meet),'' coach Paul Broneer said. ``They got together and said this cannot happen again. They really stepped up their workouts since.'' --Long-standing rivalry: The Canyon-Saugus girls' rivalry might last well past this year. Canyon's frosh-soph team defeated Saugus by one point Wednesday. A single point separated the girls' varsity teams In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of at the first Foothill meet. --In your backyard: The Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California.
